if someone puts a name in front of me and asks me to tell them what culture it comes from, you're fucking high on crack if you think that the majority of people NOT in any of the culture groups can pick out what goes where. your insistence that PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW, OKAY? OTHERWISE YOU'RE DOING IT ON PURPOSE YOU FUCKING REDNECK RACIST FUCK is rude and full of some nice assumptions there.
i'm canadian. i live in a city known for it's cultural diversity. i couldn't tell you what any of the last names i come across are in terms of which culture they come from.
how about you stop pretending this is 2+2 and give people the benefit of the doubt. ignorance about something they're not familiar with isn't being stupid for stupid's sake or being racist. there's no reason why i would have to go look up asian names to be able to tell the difference. especially since i'm not in any asian fandoms. why the hell would i know that?
if you presented the name "hiro yamada" to the average person, they aren't going to be able to pinpoint which ethnicity they are beyond "asian". the reason you can tell hiro yamada is japanese is because you have familiarity with the japanese language, which for most people is limited to "sushi" and "ninja". the differences are vast, yes, but most people don't even know enough to know why they are different.
they do if you're ignorant of what the differences are. honestly. you could put a list in front of me and i'd think they were all chinese. why does everyone seem to think that everyone else is part of anime/asian fandoms and are capable of figuring out the differences because of that? what about people not in those fandoms who have no exposure to what culture someone is?
I don't have a horse in that race. I take objection to anon(s) acting like it's SO FUCKING HARD to be able to tell the difference between Chinese and Japanese names.
like, not even asking them to play a fucking match game with them. just to notice they're different at all is apparently asking too much.
idk about you anon, but if you've done enough research into the culture to play a Japanese OC, you should probably know enough to tell the difference between names, at the very least.
you don't have to know why to notice they ARE different, though. the "why that" question comes after that. people are arguing that you shouldn't even be able to tell they're different and that's ignorant as fuck, anon.
different doesn't mean shit to someone who doesn't know anything about the languages. there is a shit ton of variety in japanese names alone. being able to see they're different doesn't mean they'll be able to understand why.
i don't know. i'm not familiar with japanese or taiwanese or chinese names to know if there is a difference. and the start of this was using someone that looked a certain way. that they had their name down was just a sort of addendum to the fact. like someone should be able to just look at a taiwanese name and somehow know that it's taiwanese.
and the argument was, 'not everyone is in the fucking know'.
for me a pb is about looks. if i find icons of someone with the perfect look and "personality" then hell yes i'm going to use them as a pb even if the race isn't perfect
right but noticing they are different doesn't mean that they'll be able to connect that they are from two different languages when they know zero about them and have no idea what sort of sounds and romanization exist within either language.
to what degree, though. that's like asking me if vaughn, anniston, smith, and cox are different. sure? i guess? but i couldn't tell you how. putting a bunch of asian names in front of me and asking me to point out which belong to their own separate group because they couldn't possibly belong to THAT group is just setting yourself up for disappointment. give me a list of twenty names and ask how many different name-groups there are and i, along with many non-asian people, will fuck that up.
yeah, but you're asking them to notice that they're different from what, exactly? there's no comparison here. you're just saying that by virtue of them coming from different cultures, we should know they're different because you say so.
idk man i know plenty of people who think "ching chong yamaha suzuki" is an acceptable phrase to use when talking about asian stuff because it all sounds like one language to them
they literally think chinese, korean, and japanese are all the same language
i find this hilarious because i had no idea about that and i have a mc name. some people, like myself, just don't give a shit about names/historical culture.
i have no idea what mine is. i think it's scottish, but it's also my mom's first husband's last name, not my dad's. my older sister who's his daughter had a wedding with kilts, so i'm guessing it's scottish.
