tell us why this show is apparently not so bad

conversely, explain why it's supposed to be bad?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-15 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
that's not a part that needs explaining

well, personally, i quit immediately after the second episode not because of the fanservice or opaque symbolism or anything like that, but because i found "yet another girl is a bear, and she is also obsessed with the main character and/or eating her, and also her actual personality is completely different than the one we have been presenting to the audience the entire time she has been on-screen, none of which was foreshadowed" to be insufferably stupid and contrived.

most of the characters have no personalities at all beyond "lesbian"

mawaru penguindrum (by the same creator) was also shitty, but at least the main characters had distinct personalities

it starts to bet better after episode 3 imo. it's still not the most amazing characterization ever, but at least the main character starts to do more than just fall down stairs

eps 4 and 6 were pretty good, imo, and went a long way towards fleshing out the characters. haven't watched 7 yet.

i can totally understand why someone would drop it after the first 2 eps, though. they were trashy and just plain bad, especially ep 2.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's the most amazing thing ever, but it's not bad. I do think the style and storytelling might not be one's cup of tea, but WG is the only place I've seen such a universally negative opinion of it, and I'm not sure how it turned out that way.

It's doing what Utena did where it jumps around, introduces a lot of characters, and you sit there wondering what the fuck is going on with the plot until it starts to delve into it further. The guy just likes fucking with people, but you can tell there's more of a story there.

I feel like it's one of those series that is so overloaded with metaphors that it makes sense the second time you watch it and you start catching onto more things.

wonder why it's universally acclaimed then. your standards don't include everyone else's, especially when it's the minority.
