Honestly, I'd be fine with them in that case and would actually like RPing out the friendship. I've just been conditioned to expect people who play the bff to want/expect the ship, so I'd be wary if someone playing the other character apped into a game I was at.
I like the ship, but I like the platonic friendship 10 times more. I can't imagine how annoying it must be to not like the ship and have to play half of the big fad pairing.
