wtf wtf wtf wtf I will never understand this. tbh, elf-only Solas romance grosses me out because it's so paternalistic and supremacist. I wish they had made Solas romanceable for all races because I would have loved a chance to romance him on my dwarf or qunari and forced him to re-examine his centuries old prejudices, to see him caught in a quandry of falling for someone he honestly thought would be merely a "savage" or a "thug. That would have been compelling.
I like Solas a lot, I think he's one of the most interesting companions, but his romance as written leaves such a bad taste in my mouth. When Bioware announced it, they said that it would "make sense when you played it" why he'd only fuck female elves, but all I got out of it was "uh, so he's a racist old-god who doesn't want to learn anything???"
Which is fine, but I have no idea how a het, white romance with a condescending, prejudiced fuck based on half-truths and manipulation became the big social justice ship, unless it's a "hot senpai singled me out and told me I was special!!!" thing. idek
(also I should specify that I would want a Solas romance with a non-elf to end the same way. He's no fun if he changes or let's himself be swayed TOO much - I just think it would have been interesting to see him pushed a little further outside his comfort zone in his romance)
I think what they meant by the "it'll make sense" thing is the whole ancient elf bit. If I were in his position I'd probably only want to pursue romantic relationships with fellow members of my species, at least initially (and if I also didn't have some sort of vague, possibly apocalyptic goal that might require me dying). He's also just a straight up (ancient) elf supremacist.
