as the above anon says, darcy's not really an mcu character so much as a comedic device. she'd not mentioned outside of the thor movies, unlike jane foster and selvig. to the avengers, she'd be some weird college student, so they'd have no desire to hang out with her nor would they know her. and it's not like thor would go around introducing her to people, since they're more like occasional buddies than real friends.

the number one complaint i hear about jane is that she's played by natalie portman. i wish that wasn't such a huge strike against her. jane is a brilliant female scientist, and quite beautiful to boot (if her brains aren't enough to attract people to the character). i'd prefer more people played her than the zillion of flat, robot-like natashas out there.

if i'm understanding right i think the op is pretty much saying exactly that but in a really convoluted way. what i'm taking away is that it's subjective. if i was a notorious wanker i wouldn't see people defending me as whiteknights. people on the other side of the disagreement would probably see it otherwise.

simple fact is, you don't want to play with her, you don't play with her. but if someone wants to play her, that's their right, self insert or not. just avoid her if the mere existence of a quirky char that people can identify with more easily than the son of an alien god bothers you that much.

i've come to hate darcy lewis because of this shit (not as much this darcy, but darcys in general). if she's not being self-inserted on and people projecting onto her all the ways they wished they were "cool" in college, then they're playing her as this sex kitten who can seduce all the guys.

really she's a moderately annoying and inconsiderate brat of a college student who ignores other people's boundaries and probably sticks around jane because janes's out there enough to keep putting up with her where most people wouldn't.

really? because the main complaint i hear is that she's boring, flat, and poorly shoehorned in as thor's love interest. being brilliant doesn't make her well-written, and she isn't. i'd still take one jane over a thousand shitty darcys, but lbr those movies aren't about the female cast so much as the thorki eyecandy.

natalie portman honestly has nothing to do with it. she's a badly managed character in what are honestly pretty bad movies outside the conflict with loki, imo. if it weren't for him i don't think people would care nearly so much about them.

this. jane's problem is that all the hints of an interesting character get brushed aside for more thor/loki screentime and even for darcy. the movies would have been more interesting and her a more compelling character if they cut down on scenes with darcy having no real purpose besides existing and fleshed out jane since she is supposed to be one of the main characters of that branch of the franchise.

dark world would have been the perfect opportunity and they blew it.

and then they half-delivered. sure, she got more screentime, but she was still as flat and underdeveloped as before. scenes wasted on darcy and her man-slave could have been used to show us a real look at jane foster, who she is and what makes her tick. instead she was mostly relegated to distressed damsel/ineffective bystander once again

i love high fantasy shit and thor's one of the few ways i get it on the big screen since lotr/hobbit's finished, anon. iron-man's just another terrible sci fi abortion in a sea of sci fi abortions.

...the love interests were already written like shit all by themselves, anon. focus being drawn away from them onto the prettyboys didn't help, but jane, darcy, pepper, etc. have never been stellar characters on their own. they're more wasted sources of potential than anything else.

and let's not even get into natasha and how they fumbled her into the worst STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER poster child ever. female characters are treated like shit in mcu so it shouldn't be surprising they get the shaft in rp too.

the only exception is MAYBE peggy and i'm not even sure she counts since she was pretty bland before the prequel series came out for her.

say what you will about the quality of the writing in the iron man movies, but there's a reason robert downey jr's smug stark is basically credited with jump-starting the mcu. i don't even like his character and i have to admit he's still eminently entertaining

it's because she's about as exciting as cardboard and the writers know it. there's nothing to give her because she's a poorly conceived character from start to finish. for someone supposedly so smart she does some awfully stupid things.
