you're pretty much right lol, it's because she's in love with rose and it's been brought up on more than one occasion. pearl/garnet is kinda popular but garnet has said she's not interested in a relationship and amethyst/vidalia as a romantic ship didn't really take off with the fandom either. ruby and sapphire aren't around a lot even though when they are they really hit you on the head with the fact that they're in love.

and like i don't want to bring race into this but it's not hard to understand why the lesbian white-looking character who thinks she knows more than everyone else, is prone to being bossy and condescending and yet suffers from horrible self-confidence issues is the most popular.

tbh im new to the fandom but i agree with you on all fronts. she's white and skinny and gay. of course she's the fandom darling. i like her but can we seriously move on from pearl and her issues already it's getting old and tiresome. yes, her grief and unrequited love is legitimate. no, i don't find it particularly interesting. but she's popular so there we are.

I wish you people claiming she's white would take a good long look at yourselves and decide to shut down your tumblr blogs for a while. these are sentient lumps of rock and also Pearl's VA is Asian. her new outfit since her regeneration has a tie that resembles an obi.

people like pearl because 1) she's tragic and people love ~tragic lesbians~ and 2) she's neurotic as fuck and a lot of people relate to her insecurities because this show attracts a lot of adult babies (ergo the kind of adult baby you find on tumblr debating the race issues of animated lumps of space rock).

before this whole drama with Rose, Pearl's popularity has skyrocketed. Tragic Lesbians is THE reason she's popular, because if you'd been in the fandom since the very early days you would have witnessed how much people disliked Pearl, because she's neurotic and nitpicky. there's a lot of fans who project onto her, sure, but there are even larger numbers who hated her.

personally I like her a lot, especially now that she's had so much great character development. but I'm hoping the end of the Sardonyx Steven Bomb with her and Garnet's talk will mean she's able to wrap up her issues long enough for us to get back on track finding Peridot.

Literally the only thing that might signify that she's Asian is the obi belt though. The ballet and nose and hair and eyes? Not as much. Garnet and Amethyst have black-coded characteristics, so if Pearl was supposed to be Asian they could easily make that more apparent.

idc if ppl wanna read her as asian either, though i disagree with her va being proof that if pearl were a human she'd be asian, because steveonnie is voiced by a cis white girl, and amethyst is also voiced by an asian woman but i'd say most humanized fanart of her depicts her as black.

Amethyst reads as latina much more than she does black. in any case it's still pants on head stupid to assume Pearl's popular because she's ~white~, otherwise Steven himself would be more popular (also why does nobody ever make the whiteness argument for Rose when she's the only gem with an actual human white-looking skintone)

I really like diving into Pearl's issues, but I feel so dissatisfied with the 'resolution' at the end of the Week of Sardonyx that I'm actually hoping we get to see more of a resolution later? I didn't like how long the issue was dragging out but I also felt like the end was way too rushed. They've also brought up new things, too, I guess an explanation for why Pearl sort of is the way she is ('I'm just a pearl,' which might feed into her whole low self-worth) would be nice, so we can understand her and, hopefully, so a character in the show can understand her and help her move on and grow.

I like Pearl a lot as a character and I like her flaws a lot! But she's not growing from her flaws as much as I'd say someone like Amethyst is, and I think that's an important step to take.

lbr garnet really only became most popular after jailbreak because lesbians. she was liked before of course, but everyone blew up about her because of that.

before that i'd say pearl was the most popular gem, since she was the one normally getting episodes focused on her alone. garnet only had a couple episodes focused on her primarily before jailbreak. ironically, pearl is now the gem we know least about compared to amethyst and garnet.
