I know people will say "But holidays!", but honestly the game had been getting lackluster before then.

Maybe I'm just burning out. I remember pretty eagerly anticipating my monster and such over a year ago when I first joined, but it's gotten to the point that I don't even bother with newbie intro logs anymore because it's just "Welcome to Ryslig, yes I'm a monster. Soon you're going to be a monster too, deal with it."

It's not just you.

I think some of you are burning out tbh. While I would prefer better NPCs/more mod interaction, Ryslig looks like it's settling into a more casual body horror setting, and there's only so much transformation and cannibalism some people can play out before it gets boring. And before anyone says "mods should be more creative with events!" any special occasion they cook up will still be a variation of body horror and cannibalism. Any PVP stuff they suggest is going to rely on the players actually playing it out.

Does that mean the game is horrible? Absolutely not. There are still tons of people having fun. But for the people who have been playing the same old thing for a while, it's understandable if it gets boring to you. It simply means it's time for you to move on, or butt heads with your cr to see if you can't spice things up.

Ryslig is a one-note kind of game. If you're bored then it's best you move on.

I disagree. Sure, body horror and cannibalism will always be there, but that doesn't mean every single event must involve both of them at the forefront. Some games go years without having a single event that contains either so there are plenty of things that could be done. And if PvP had more incentives, more people would probably play it. Right now there's really no IC reason for most characters because the gods have been non-entities for a long time. Who wants their character to become devoted to a god they'll probably never get to interact with?

I'm not sick of playing my character as a monster, it's just that playing my character as a monster isn't enough on its own to sustain my interest in the absence of anything else. Yeah, I'm mostly bored of change logs at this point, but I like my CR and I like the monster aspect and there are plenty of event and PvP things I'd be hyped to play. A lot of people seem to have similar complaints, so I don't think the playerbase as a whole has settled into anything, it's just what we've been given lately.

I'm not sure what you meant by this. Obviously other games could go years without those kinds of events, they aren't body horror themed. Genuinely curious about your wording there, but otherwise, if you've got some events in mind, I'm sure the mods wouldn't mind you throwing suggestions at them.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I meant that just because Ryslig has a body horror theme doesn't mean every single event has to be related to body horror or cannibalism. Sorry if it was poorly worded.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I see. That's true, but they can't stray too far from the theme given the setting. I think the Street To Know Where plot is the only one that didn't involved body horror or cannibalism. Even the main appeal of the angry mob event was to see how fucked up your character was after the damage.

That said, some more psychological stuff would be great, but again, that's fairly limited as well.

IMO, the body horror theme is always present simply because of the fact that our characters are monsters. Plus, events almost always have an opt out, so I think the mods are free to use them to explore other themes. They're not beholden to all body horror all the time.

Obviously they shouldn't suddenly spring smut events or pure crack on us, but I think action/political/other types of horror is perfectly fair game.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps! We'll see. Political horror sounds like a bore and the standard monsters vs humans, and action could be fun, but the game moves too slow for a large scale action plot. I would bet money half of the player base plots out what happens but never act it out.

I'm sounding like a downer, but I do still enjoy the game as is, but I have little faith in things changing, nor am I holding my breath for anything more than quick, fun one-note events.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I meant general political events, not political horror. I don't even think that's a thing, ha.

And ehh, I don't really think we're a slow game? No more than any other game on dreamwidth, anyways. There are some super slow players but I don't think they're a majority. Our events almost always reach captcha and they do it pretty fast.

On the subject of political events:

There's a guide in the village descriptions that states how the general townies feel about the monster population. I want to see that change.

Vandare has gotten the brunt of it for over a year. they're still "wary but hospitable"? They're members of a waterfront town that make their living from fishing and sea trade. They're not being impacted by sea monsters everywhere clogging up the waters? The mayor has a low monster tolerance, but hasn't created any laws to stop his people from being savaged?

Almost a year later, how is Rota? Did the survivors stick around? Would they be hospitable if the monsters were pushed out of one of their primary towns?

Has anyone even been to Kulen yet?

I don't need Gods to come down from on high and give my character a genderswap / mindfuck. But the town descriptions are breathing, living things that look like they were initially designed to grow and change. I understand that the groundwork was about four dozen mods ago, but the templates are still there.

And so are our player characters, making people afraid to go outside on foggy days.

I handwave interactions with NPCs fairly regularly in my own play, but it feels a little bit like my CR and I are spinning off into a PSL/musebox setting because there's no backup from the setting to ground it in the same game that involves everyone else.

The problem with the creating laws thing is how to enforce it, though, and especially OOC it can get boring if your characters become increasingly limited because they don't have many choices in what they can eat/do/etc. Some opposition is fun, but it's also a delicate balance of "but how do we do the thing without so severely limiting options that would mean our characters can't get jobs/homes/etc?"

ICly, they do still need currency to buy things like clothes and pay rent. Unless you want to suddenly have a ton of homeless monsters with no jobs who are running around in increasingly ratty clothing, which isn't a lot of fun for most people.

Kulen hasn't even had a proper introductory event like Rota did, so I don't think anyone's actually been there.

You're right though; the setting feels like it was supposed to be more than it is. It was supposed to change and not stagnate, but the mods just never actually did anything with it. The biggest thing was Rota being wiped off the map, and that's about it.
