Yes, they would be giving up their slot. Matt would be able to fight another Bloody Bones member sure, but fighting just another BB member was not the big appeal of that RNG. The appeal was the chance at having a really big impact on the game, and on the relations between monsters the NPC humans, and the Bloody Bones, by actually deciding the fate of a BB member.
Only, it turns out players don't get to decide Debbies fate (beyond how she dies). In fact, players get so little say in it, that if their character can't just let her die, they have to hand over that opportunity to a character that will play the scenario out the way they want.
