There are literally corpses moving around in PokeSpe. Like, actual rotting corpses. I sure as fuck wouldn't want my kids exposed to that.

uh

i never did say it was for adults

i was responding to this
that shit's in there as background noise, or to give kids a reason to hate the villains, who are ridiculously bumbling morons half the time even if they have these grand schemes. Pokemon is not a "dark" canon and making it into one is Missing The Point.

this is probably true of the anime which is definitely geared to elementary school kids and it's definitely a brightly colored children's cartoon

but the pokemon special manga was noticeable for being particularly dark for a children's comic, especially in the beginning where one pokemon was sliced in half by another and the reanimated rotting corpses of pokemon were running around in that same chapter.

it was probably because of this that the special manga wasn't localized for nearly 15 years in the US, because of scenes like this and others. there was another edit i can remember off the top of my head where the girl trainer was tied up but taunts sabrina for having bigger boobs than her, all to have her attack her and release her pokemon in her pokeballs that she'd stuffed in her top. obviously that didn't make it through in 1999.

but the manga isn't as dark as it originally was, although i wouldn't say that it's anywhere close or lighthearted as the anime. throughout the entire series, multiple adult enemies keep trying to kill the kid protagonists, characters have died (although some of them were brought back to life afterwards after the angst played out) and the ending of one arc had nearly every single hero in the arc suddenly turned into stone, which was far from a happy ending. noticeably in the bw arc, the gym leaders were beaten up and crucified, which is decidedly dark.

i don't disagree with you that it's still targeted for children because the manga runs in a shounen magazine, but i disagree that because of that, there are no underlying dark themes that can be explored within the background or the setting. obviously it's not a post-apocalyptic wasteland like in fallout 4 and one of the reoccuring themes i've noticed over the years has been environmentalism and portraying a healthy way of humans and pokemon/animals living with each other without disturbing or destroying the latter's environment, which is definitely a message to children.

Re: MOST HATED SHIPPING/COUPLE TROPES

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
most tropes involving a couple's desire for and attempts to adopt/have kids tbh. bonus points if the kid finally arrives after much drama and heartbreak and consuming most of the couple's screentime only to be more or less forgotten about except when needed as a plot point. a+ way to show how desperately those characters wanted to be parents. idk i'd just like to see more couples in fiction who are happy being childless and for it to not be a big deal that they are. especially if it doesn't make sense setting or story or characterization-wise for them to be so obsessed with making babies.

runner up is will-they-or-won't-they that you know is going to be "they will", except to get to that point you have to sit through dozens of hours of false starts, breakups, other love interests etc. long past the point where the ust has gotten stale. i especially hate this when the writers do it under the guise of "keeping things interesting" (hint: maybe they're not a great pairing after all if you can't figure out how to make them interesting once they're official) and get pissed at the fans for getting frustrated and bailing when they're let down for the thousandth time.

See: "Lucy," from 2014, where she actually tried the action hero lead. And yet they still cast her to lead the white Ghost in the Shell for some reason.

Agents of Shield. Last nail in the coffin was when they finally killed off Ward, who should have been written out long ago. But the second Coulson crushes his chest you realize: Ward just died next to a corpsesnatching alien. Ward isn't finally being written out at all. This show will just forever linger on the growing shitstorm that is this character.
