In a perfect world where they didn't decide Korra was bi just because the fanbase wanted it and paired her up with literally her only option as far as girlfriends go, they would have waited until the comics to say she was bi and introduce a new character to be her girlfriend instead (or ideally have her stay single but W/E).
Now Korra is stuck with the world's most boring girlfriend. I'm pretty sure she would have better sex with a realdoll.
imo Korra had more chemistry with Opal than with Asami.
like, it's cool that Korra is bi, and it's cool if she realized she actually wasn't in to Mako like she thought and is lesbian, or whatever she identifies with in the end.
but the way it was implemented was so dumb. yeah yeah nick censors, but even if they couldn't implement it better, that doesn't excuse what's basically a lack of development in the friendship department.
it's like their greatest bonding moment was making fun of Mako like a bunch of school yard girl bullies. it was immature and eyeroll worthy. followed by Asami being the only one Korra wrote to, which is a slap in the face to all of her other friends.
basically the relationship of Korra and Asami was a lot of telling, not "showing."
Korra/Opal was such a missed opportunity. Like I can't say it was 100% the better ship but I think Opal was basically the character Asami's fanbase believed she was. I was pretty disappointed when the ship didn't really take off with the fandom.
that doesn't excuse what's basically a lack of development in the friendship department.
Yeah, that's pretty much it. Aside from the very beginning and the very end, Asami acted more like a sidekick than Korra's love interest in book 3. It really felt like Bryke were content to let the fandom write the ship with the their headcanons while they fell back on really weak Kataang parallels (Asami holding Korra while riding Naga, watching her meditate) and conveniently forgetting there were a lot of people who didn't ship/see it. And that's not even getting into how much of a non-entity Asami was in book 4 while they kept focusing on Korra and Mako's relationship.
I can appreciate what Korrasami means to a lot of people but I still think it ought to be included in Buzzfeed-style slideshows about "how not to write a same-sex couple and then blame your fanbase for not seeing it coming".
