this person on my list just goes for the blanket outrage echo chamber plurks. literally plurking popular opinions and acting like they're unpopular.

(in regards to trump) "i don't understand america." yes. let's just be racist for a casual second and pretend EVERYONE is voting for trump and ALL of america is irrational. literal soapbox bs here.

"do american schools not teach critical thinking? we start that shit in kindergarten." nice. contributes to the discussion. really highlighting important things here.

and the more plurks i see from this person the more i realize they just plurk AT people instead of to them. smh

people who shit all over america while completely ignoring their own countries issues annoy the piss out of me. america has problems and bringing that up is fine but when they talk about how their country is ~so much better~ it drives me nuts.

It especially pisses me off when people from the UK do this. Of course, since the Brexit vote they've all seemed to clam up.

All countries are shit in some way, let's all just accept it.

Re: +1

i used to know an rper that did this that was from the uk, but they have just as many issues (including racism) in a country that is less than half the size and far less diverse. their job pool is worse for young people and just because they have socialized medicine doesn't make them closer to canada. the monarchy is pretty fucking gross and the fact that you're paying taxes to support these backwards ass white people who are nothing but figure heads is literal garbage. i'd be fine with it if they were progressive on other points but they really aren't, especially when it comes to their anti-black/anti-indian groups being incredibly vocal and violent. let's not forget their own brand of trailer park trash, too...

tbh most of these countries (even canada) can't ever possibly understand the complexities because their countries aren't so vast and populated by so many different people from so many different backgrounds, upbringings, and i really hate the melting pot analogy considering racism and selective "melting pot" parts but it really is. to some degree i do understand because a nation as large, progressive, and at least formerly industrious as the us shouldn't have the problems we do but i think part of that is religion and big business having their hands in the pot. it's not the citizens of the country that do that, though, and if anything you should be wondering what's wrong with the world that we allow for big business to do this the world over and for religion to really be what defines our presidencies and some of our laws.

I wonder if we knew the same person

bc i knew this one girl who would trash the us and self deprecate about the uk but in comparison the uk was always better in her eyes and she claimed she was 1/16th korean so her opinion on colonialism meant more than this indonesian chick whose family actually suffered from decolonisation

im like yeah sure you know better, growing up fairskinned AND native to the uk

I read once that that attitude actually contributes to the reason that America makes such headway on progressive issues. Other countries tend to want to cover up their bad spots and not let anyone know they exact, while Americans have this almost perverse habit of going LOOK AT THIS SHIT, DO YOU SEE WHAT BULLSHIT THIS IS? Which calls attention to the problems and helps resolve them.

I was kinda skeptical of the article at the time, but things like that make me wonder at the veracity of it.

ehhhh, america isn't exactly so gleamingly shiny when it comes to not covering up the horrible things we've done in our past and continue to do to this day. a lot of it gets zero media screentime, or in the case of shit like how we've treated natives since the very beginning, it's given minimal attention and a whitewashed account of what went down.

that and we have a whoooole lot of people that gleefully claim awful things happening today are, in fact, good things.

Re: PLURK PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
that's definitely an interesting concept, and i can see how that can be the case!

i feel in general it's a good idea to have an actual DISCUSSION about things, with the ability to be open-minded and intelligently argue, rather than just actively shit on something without prejudice just because you can.

since we're sharing, i think another thing that contributes to this symptom of soapboxing is outrage. i read an article talking about how outrage is addictive and blinding, and thus just talking about inflammatory things and inciting outrage is quite unproductive and it just makes people feel good without promoting a real conversation. it's supposedly how anti-vaccination movements and such gain so much momentum.

ironically that very quality is what has led to the rise of trump and the very real possibility of the progress train flying off the tracks come this november

99% of trump's momentum is coming from white male cishets tired of being told they are single-handedly responsible for all the world's evils

That's an interesting way to look at it. Considering what an anon mentioned before, it's probably worth thinking about. The issues that aren't getting any attention, like the living conditions on reservations for Native Americans, get ignored. (I can't cite this as fact, but I was told by someone involved that part of the problem is if someone fixes up their home it can be taken away and given to someone in a more powerful position, since it's government owned. Which forces people to live in poorer conditions or else their homes could be taken on a whim. Sucks.)

Other issues get a lot of attention and are blown up, forcing politicians to at least say they're going to do something about them. And maybe that happens more often here. I couldn't say since I haven't spent too much time in other countries.

America isn't any more progressive than any other countries tho? Like, it's not less so, but it's not some magical utopia of progression in any way shape or form.

in general reaction to the thread as well, this is the kind of thing that pisses foreigners off. America's just another country. Some people love it, some people trash it, but it's the only country determined to make itself and everyone else believe it's inherently ~special and no one should ever backtalk it. If anything, the fact that American news is world news makes it even more likely we're all going to see it and have opinions on it.

(And the more smug y'all act about brexit, the closer we come to the irony actually causing a time-space collapse if you elect Trump, so I'd keep an eye on that.)

oh yes it does. we are overworked and underpaid starting at a very young age. by the time a young american is finally out of schooling (if they manage to even afford to get into college), they already have debt of tens of thousands of dollars.

and don't you dare fucking get sick in this country, and especially don't you dare be unlucky enough to be born with a condition.

then there's the whackos in our country that have a stranglehold on our political system. the people who still think gay people are going to sneak into their homes and infect them with the gay. the people who think their right to own a fucking machine gun trumps a kindergartner's right not to be fucking mown down in their own classroom. people who literally think that a woman's body has the magical ability to recognize rape jizz and flush it out. people who have actually made it possible for a psychotic, racist douchebag fraud and conman like donald trump to maybe become the president of the united states.

half the world doesn't respect us because we're crazy assholes who think we can do what we want, and the other half of the world are terrified of us for the exact same reason.

we're fucked. we may not be the worst, but when the countries that are worse than us can mostly be found in the third world and run by genocidal dictators or countries run by crazies like vladimir putin, that's not exactly a high bar that we've jumped over.

canadian here.

i think part of it is that it's a first world country where they have third world conditions and the politicians and media don't want to actually focus on that. so from an outside perspective, you hear 'we're number one. fuck the rest of the world. we're the super country', but you're seeing news reports about racial violence/racism, laws being passed that practically make being a woman a crime, dress codes that contradict themselves, people doing things that are just flat out stupid, but no, america's the greatest.

there is no wank in the united states. i think it's that most other countries acknowledge they're fucked up and the us denies it so vehemently and will punch you in the face if you say otherwise. (or some parts of it do. do not be anti american if you're in texas)
