i mean that's literally what some people in this thread are saying tho. that a pet should just die in the care of someone who can't care for it rather than people not adopting expensive/medically complex pets if they can't afford them. a bird or snake is cheaper in vet bills and has just as much personality.

vets aren't typically trained to treat snakes or lizards. if your snake or lizard gets sick you're most likely shit out of luck unless you have a specialist in your area.

Well this has been a banner day. Woke up sick, went out anyway, got the first run to storage done only to have to go to home depot alone, which freaked me out.

Is it Fairy Tail? Maybe another series that I don't read ended in a similar way, but this matches the fan reaction to the end of that series. (especially with the main pairing)
even birds aren't cheap if they get sick. i had a cockatiel that had chronic health problems and that bird ran me up thousands of dollars in vet bills. i could afford it but i had not expected a $30 bird to end up costing me so much.
just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it hasn't. doing this in private means deets out people. ime they go after people they know are having a hard time. if you're not that person, you probably won't ever see this.
