yeah, but we're comparing two ships that feature the same character. i don't think klance can exist as a background ship in a sheith fic, or vice versa, anon.
i know, but they're background for other ships, that's the point. if you read stuff like hunk/shay, hunk/pidge, lotor/allura or allura/romelle, you will find one of those two to go along with them.
i understand what you're saying but the skewing of the numbers is only marginally off, especially when the discrepancy between klance and sheith is as large as it is. i agree with your shallura take, btw. i've seen some assholish shallura shippers but they're very few; meanwhile there's a lot of klance shippers who use either shallura or shadam as a way to get rid of sheith.
but they're not going to be background ships *in the same fic*, anon. or at least highly unlikely to be. so that's not going to throw off the count at all, especially not to the degree of difference between them.
