For what it's worth anon, they weren't dating in the last season. They got together in the finale (presumably off screen sometime between Korra and Asami agreeing to go to the spirit world together, and the final scene where they're actually going), which is explained in interviews with the cast, and is also covered in the follow-up graphic novel, where they actually discuss their relationship and feelings in greater detail. No one knew they were together until they got back from their trip.
I do wish they could have had that in the series proper, but I also think the criticisms about the romantic in the first season are why they wanted to keep it subtle and make for a surprise reveal in the end instead.
unfortunately subtle felt more like barely there. from what i’ve seen of turf wars it honestly handles their relationship so much better but the fact that it has to be relegated to companion materials... sigh.
honestly i was hoping to ship mako/korra when i saw their character designs but the first season turned me off the ship completely.
I'm glad they are fixing it in the side material, but you can't just produce a ship out of nothing because I am glad it's canon, but I think it hurt things by feelings more like an attention grab than anything that had substance. =(
Still, I'm liking the "didn't get together till the very last scene" angle a thousand times more than fandom trying to pitch the letters as viable proof because Korra's options for letter correspondence wasn't great.
Also Bryke has shown several times that when they don't want to, they don't listen to crit, which is how we got ship teased amazingly over Zutara since they were getting crit on that from early.
