i respect riordan deeply for making a character unambiguously gay in a kid's book and i appreciate what he was trying to do in giving nico a love interest like all the others and making it someone who would have reason to show up in ToA so the relationship could get some screentime. but the ship itself was just poorly handled and it feels like kind of a disservice to nico's character that he had so much stress over his sexuality and crush on percy in HoO and then just spontaneously has a boyfriend in the next book with no buildup. maybe it could have had potential if will and nico's relationship had developed over the course of ToA and they'd gotten together towards the end or something, but as it is i just find it frustrating and uninteresting.
not to mention that all the fans have turned nico and will into a bicycle for the ship. what happened to letting the characters stand on their own merit. i like seeing nico happy for once, but forsaking his character's build up and everything he's gone through for the sake of it just feels disingenuous or something to me.
