serious response as someone who used to ship and receive shit a lot: if this is a common issue, set up an account with fedex (and ups/dhl/the post office/etc). usually you'll get notifs about incoming packages and you can change them to require a signature or to be rerouted and held at a store.
some services charge you for this (last i knew, ups did that) but it can still be really handy.
also if you know someone is going to ship to you, tell them the package needs to be signed for. if you aren't home then the driver can't leave it, they have to take it with them.
Also if you didn't sign up or give specifics before the day of delivery (not uncommon with USPS because their tracking is terrible) you can also leave a note on the door for the carrier advising where they may leave it or if you prefer they do not leave it. The carriers are also required to follow written instructions left for them.
works in reverse too. i'm disabled and can't drive or go stand in line somewhere and have a notice up telling carriers to leave packages on the stoop or with our next door neighbor who doesn't work cause her husband has a good job. even the guy who hand delivers my medication leaves it with the neighbor now if i'm not home or awake, best thing i've ever done for myself.
