what does "tankie" mean

i've seen it various places but i can never pin down a definition just from context other than that it has something to do with [commie/socialist?] politics

A tankie is a hardline communist that whitewashes authoritarian communist regimes, mainly the USSR. The name comes from the people who supported the USSR sending in the tanks to crush the Hungarian Revolution.

basically what the other anon said. they take a "my party, right or wrong" approach to communism/socialism and basically refuse to be critical of, and often even praise, governments and leaders that have committed terrible acts.

in some cases, yeah, a lot of the stuff attributed to some communist regimes is a lot of blown up anti-red propaganda cooked up and spread around but isn't really based in any truth. but there's plenty of historical proof that, say, stalin was a bit of a fucking shithead. but tankies still talk about stalin like he was a great person/leader.
