who the fuck goes trick or treating a week before halloween? (no, i get people do, i just never understood why any sane human being would do such a thing.)

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
you're a step ahead of me, anon, I had no clue this was even a thing

holidays aren't just on whatever day you decide to have them on, wtf

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
some places have designated trick-or-treats at other times because the neighborhoods aren't safe to go out at night and halloween is often on a weekday when kids are in school when it's light out

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
jesus, that's bleak

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
it's usually more about paranoid helicopter parents not wanting their children going outside on a weeknight than any actual danger tho

+1000

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
yep

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
not really. most of the neighborhoods that do this shit are middle class suburbs where the worst thing that has happened in the last ten years is bob accidentally backing over the lid of susie's garbage can.

they're just terrified their kids are in danger from the bogeyman because they believe a bunch of stupid urban legends and also there was a shooting in the city an hour away five days after their last trip, so you know, their baby almost died and is in so much danger.

okay, that's still pretty bleak, but for different reasons

(Anonymous) 2018-10-25 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
this made me laugh and idk why

parents nowadays are a riot

+1

my neighborhood i moved to was like this. it was designated a night other than halloween itself and wasn't allowed to go after dark.

the reason for it was because the neighborhood had some idea about how halloween "isn't safe" because "pranksters" and if you moved the date it would foil mischief night or something.

thank god i was allowed to trick or treat after dark as a kid, this shit's just depressing and no fun to watch.

it was this promotional thing at the local baseball field. a bunch of companies sent people out to give away candy and hand out coupons and flyers and crap promoting their stuff. kids heard about it at school and it's a one day only thing so i had to drop all my plans for the evening to take them

it wasn't terrible and i'm glad i took them for their sake, but standing outside for an hour as the only idiot in short sleeves was not fun

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
when i was a kid, there was a special pre-halloween trick or treat downtown to encourage local shopping. it's not that big a deal.

my safe suburban town does trick or treating on the 30th with designated trick-or-treating hours during daylight only

it's so watered down and it makes me happy i didn't live here as a child

(Anonymous) 2018-10-25 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
it's for the kids, anon!

like another anon said, some places have events solely for local businesses to hand out candy, pencils, etc with their business cards. some businesses may even have keychains, mini flashlights, pens, and other junk with their info on it.

there are also some places that have "trunk or treating" events, especially for little kids. how it works is that a bunch of people park in a designated area, optionally decorate the back of their cars, and kids will go around and ask for candy as if they were going door-to-door, but it's in a safely contained area. depending on who's hosting the event, they may also serve food/drinks and maybe party games to the people who come.

get the kids used to shady black market dealings, nice

There's also school trick-or-treating and such. Our school does an event where a people come in their cars and set up shop from the trunks of their cars, and the kids go car to car at the school.

They don't do this on Halloween because a lot of the kids are doing their own things with their own families on Halloween. It's not too strange to hold an event beforehand, like Halloween/Christmas/etc, with another group because you'll be with family on the day of, so it can always just be that.

my job does a trick or treat charity community/charity thing a week or so before halloween to avoid scheduling conflicts and because the last day of the month is busy. the turn out was pretty great.

think of it like people doing work related holiday parties not on the actual holiday. because no one wants to be at work during a holiday you have off.
