if we want the shiny boom and bust cycle to stop we need to stop giving a pass to the people who keep leaving their other games in the lurch to chase the newest fad. they'll only stop biting off more than they can chew when they feel social repercussions. right now they're taking advantage of their friends being too nice or nonconfrontational to call them out for ditching them. they may not be doing it to be assholes on purpose but they're rationalizing that it's ok because nobody says anything or stops playing with them when they come back.
keep them as fandom friends or for memes and psls but write them off for game rp until they show they're being responsible about their game commitments. don't welcome them back to their other games like nothing happened when the fad passes. don't tag or plot with them unless they come to you first. prioritize your consistent cr over them. retcon their involvement out and proceed when they're in a plot with multiple people and leave it hanging too long. don't help them with ac at the last minute. don't enable them into new games when you know they can't keep up with more than one.
i absolutely agree with everything you're saying. and i wish it could be done. but this hobby is notorious for buttpatting and coddling flakes like this.
no one can call them out for this behavior because then you are being an asshole or you're "taking rp too seriously", [insert whatever excuse said flake and their flakey friends will hurl at you], etc.
and if you personally don't help them with activity, there's always some person that is too nice or completely ignorant of the flake being a fad chasing flake and ends up helping them in that last minute.
so while i would love these players to face some repercussions for repeatedly leaving people in a lurch, it's not going to happen. the best i can do is bitch here in their duplishitty game thread and hopefully make them feel shitty for being shitty to their cr in other games.
