It's more like if you're playing Captain America don't use Johnny Storm icons.

Re: Megan

(Anonymous) 2022-04-11 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
no. it means that it probably won't fly if someone tries to app a character that isn't captain america using captain america as a pb. that's what happened with the yennefer pb.

don't we prefer that people use less recognisable pbs in this hobby anyways? it's why we make fun of stupid shit like the jensen ackles trunks.

People were wanking on this all weekend and only now does someone point this out? I didn't think the Dave showed up until after the weird OTT monologue. Completely changes how I look at the situation.

Re: Megan

(Anonymous) 2022-04-11 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
um, no, we don't. if someone is using chris evans icons without the star spangled stuff and it's him in his civvies, then i don't see the problem. just like using dany icons for an oc or a pb that fits that look. actors play multiple roles because they fit multiple aesthetics. it shouldn't be surprising that someone might use a medieval/magical established character that might be well known to play a book character since it's not like there's a wealth of pbs for a wider assortment of historical magical figures. if you're using a pb, you're going to by default pick up an already canon character (likely). you shouldn't have to go dig up old vhs tapes to find some old forgotten pb just so some titinfant doesn't throw a shitfit that you don't want to play facetwins or that you're using their trademarked borrowed property.

drinking milk is good and also healthy for you

Re: Megan

(Anonymous) 2022-04-12 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
i've seen someone use a major got character as a pb for their oc and the got/asoiaf cast did not appreciate the player trying to push the facetwin game on them, so it does have a history of being uncomfortable as fuck in games and there's a reason why most people don't want to deal with pb bullshit in their games these days.

and if there is an actual rule against it then you should follow those rules instead of throwing a bitchfit about racism.

Re: Megan

....except is it a rule?? This is all I could find on the faq.

Can I use a PB?
For OCs or canons with limited or unavailable visuals (such as novels or comic books with difficult-to-find digital scans), PBs are fine. It's also acceptable for malleable protagonists with customizable appearances (such as Mass Effect), as we understand that not everyone has access to resources that allow screencapping of their characters (or the visuals are severely limited, such as first-person gameplay). Fanart and commissions are also sufficient alternatives, as well as some additional "special" icons (i.e. pets, animal forms, morphs, et cetera).

Non-humans are not required to be humanized for the setting, however, so we would prefer to leave their physical appearance intact. Additionally, we would rather players do not substitute a PB for a character with already available visuals. For example, we would allow use of a PB for younger/older versions of Harry Potter characters or make exceptions if you are intending to play strictly from the books than the movies, but we will discourage anyone from drastically altering a character's canon appearance by using a PB, especially if that character has plenty of screentime and visuals in their canon.

And the facetwin thing is easily mitigated enough by saying "I don't want to play facetwin mechanics." If the other person pushes that it's a different issue.

Re: Megan

(Anonymous) 2022-04-12 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
i agree about the facetwin thing, but if the person is willing to not go that route and avoid the comparison/facetwin aspect, it shouldn't be an issue. it's the same to me as someone playing different roles from the same actor. i'm not a fan of the facetwin angle, so even with multiple chars from the same actor, i prefer to not play in to the 'i thought you were my boyfriend/brother/dad' game.

someone pushing into a cast from an oc or from any other cast is a bad move. having sameface doesn't make it better or worse. just still bad.

Re: Megan

(Anonymous) 2022-04-12 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I think the other part of this is that the character in question had a PB in the show version but didn't want to use them.

Re: Megan

(Anonymous) 2022-04-12 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
show and books don't always line up. the original part of this was a book cast. i've seen some people use different pbs for hp from books or got from books or a lot of show/movies that have book series with them to show they're different.

Re: Megan

(Anonymous) 2022-04-12 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
No she didn't.

She did come into that player's plurk and tell them (not via private plurk) that they needed to ask Yennefer's player for permission to use her as a pb.

Re: Megan

(Anonymous) 2022-04-12 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
sa

eg, look at shadow and bone/grishaverse. the book descriptions are wildly different for some of the characters that were cast in the series. don't get me started on the racism aspect when the shows wrote for inclusivity of cast and the books have a very different aesthetic that doesn't line up, so it'd be kind of a dick move to call someone a racist if they went with a book fitting pb for the main char instead of the poc visual cast.

+1

Ehhhhh. I think a dm from Yen's player would have been the most tactful. It does seem similar to them speaking for their castmate, though, like what happened with the John player.

has it ever occurred to you that you've been through this place again and again and in the same spot every time you repeatedly die, you've tried so many times to get across the disappearing tiles on the wall but again you're falling off of them

I agree, but it's not the fit that OP was trying to suggest.

In this situation Col also spoke for their castmate when the mods made a ruling.
