I'm just not sure what those other people are hoping to get out of the thread when they go this route. Smokers already know smoking is bad, and your character getting preachy isn't going to be the sudden revelation that frees mine from their bad habits. And I, the player, am not a smoker, so what's the point?

At best my character will bow out of the thread to go somewhere else; at worst they will tell yours to fuck off and mind their own business. Either way, it seems like a dead end for CR.

reminds me of people irl who walk close enough to smoke designated areas (outside you know, like with a smoke-out for butts and a sign for smoking) to wheeze and hack and cough. like what is the purpose dude.

that sounds exhausting

yeah the hypocrisy is what gets to me, especially in panfandom games where a character might encounter villains/criminals/murderers or other people who do bad things and don't care, but the lectures are always about.. smoking and binge drinking???

if anyone does it to me these days I just drop the thread immediately and avoid them for tags in the future. it's so boring.

It reminds me of this tumblr discord rp my friend is in with someone who shakes and cries if Weed is mentioned but not heroin, alcohol, or other addictions. I wonder if they'd be upset by the smoking too...

Not an excuse, because it's still just bad writing and OOC, but it goes back to watching an action hero get stabbed 27 times and not flinching, but wincing when they walk on broken glass barefoot. The player cannot imagine interacting with violent murderers in that capacity, as viewers have no 'that time I got violently stabbed over and over' tab in their memories to reference, but they are familiar with people who smoke and drink and have lectures ready, just as they're familiar with stepping on pointy things.

but they still don't have to bring it up every time? "I know people who smoke/drink/do heroin" Ok? And? Does your character also or are you just mouth piecing them?

they're probably rather on the large side

it's one thing to tell off a smoking character if they're being rude about it (like smoking indoors), or a brief 'can't you wait/do it elsewhere?' but the full on lecturing is annoying and often feel like an ic/ooc blur.
