this shit makes me so mad as someone who decided against getting another pet after my last one died because i'm not as financially stable as i'd like to be right now and it wouldn't be fair to the pet

on the flipside, my peeve is people bitching about this like everyone should have considered the possibility of being laid off in a pandemic before they got their kitten TEN YEARS AGO

this.

situations change. it's like judging people who are poor but have some nice things that they were given or had got before falling into hard times.

now if you purposefully got a pet after your financial turmoil, then you're the asshole.

yeah i only get pissed at the people who have been in a precarious financial position all along but decide to get a pet anyway and then just hope it never needs any kind of vet care at all. that's not how it works, it's not like you can predict that your pet is going to get sick or eat something they shouldn't or injure themselves in some stupid fashion.

this, but extend it to every other unforeseeable financial disaster. half the people on this website are from a capitalist hellscape where something that would be a routine medical procedure in any civilized country can lead to total bankruptcy. shit happens. people get poor. "never get a pet unless you, personally, have enough millions to never have to worry about financial ruin no matter what happens" is not a reasonable rule for anyone to live by.

I don't mind people asking for money to help their young pets or even pets who have pre-existing or recently diagnosed conditions. No one can predict when your kitten is gonna eat a sock and need $4,000 worth of vet care or when your vet is suddenly going to diagnose your dog with diabetes.

My only annoyance is people who have pets that are getting very old and then act surprised pikachu face when they have serious issues go wrong with them. News flash: if a pet has gotten above the age of ten, they're now a senior, so you need to start squirreling cash away because inevitably they're gonna have a major health crisis whether you like it or not. Whether that comes at age ten, thirteen, or twenty is something nobody can predict but it WILL happen eventually if you have an elderly pet.

even then that's something you need to be prepared for, though. pets are dumb and they eat stupid things, that's just how they are. you would think they have some sort of instinct that would tell them that doing so is dangerous for them but they really, really don't, and no matter how vigilant you are, stuff can still happen. i thought i was being as careful as i could be about not having any sort of twine, ribbons, string, plastic ties etc. around and yet my cat managed to eat a decorative ribbon off a sweater and land herself with expensive vet bills.

da

ideally, yes, but even if you have a buffer, it's very easy for emergency vet bills to be much higher than you could reasonably prepare for. and most people don't have multiple emergency funds, they have one pool, so if eg. someone's car needs a major unforeseen repair and then the cat manages to find and eat a plastic bag, the cat still needs vet care, but the money's already been depleted.

my bad dude, next time i'll consult an oracle so i know a massive global pandemic is going to make my well-paying job cease to exist and devour my entire savings before i can manage to land another one that keeps me above water before i consider getting a pet.

adding to this, when people come to plurk to beg for thousands of dollars for vet bills that would never have happened if they'd just been a responsible pet owner and gotten the pet fixed in the first place like they should have

yeah i mad
