no joke, someone on twitter did in fact make slash art of Russia and Ukraine like one day into the invasion, so, you know, you're probably right

wait, slash art? ukraine is a woman in hetalia. of course they'd yaoify their offensive shit, too. unless you mean they made up different, non-hetalia personifications, in which case it's still horrible

it was different, non-hetalia personifications that were both men and resolved their difference with a crying makeout. and yeah it was tasteless as shit.

I distanced myself from Hetalia fandom way back when they had the Germany+Prussia photoshoot outside the Holocaust museum during Anime Boston I'm not even surprised this is a thing.

I used to play against Alphie back in the days when HS was big because I was never warned about her behavior. It wasn't until she was shamed off the site that I found out about everything.

yeah I guess I should have mentioned that part but the photo shoot by itself was offensive enough without it for sure. I wasn't at AB that year but holy moly I was on the Livejournal community for Hetalia when it went down and it was a roller coaster.

god that must have been wild to live through

the flurry of "i'm sorries" and "it wasn't me/us it was xyz" and "was it rly that bad tho?" divided the community for weeks afterward

i remember this incident

i had friends who casually liked hetalia and they all talked about it at least once a day

but after this incident, everybody suddenly stopped talking about hetalia

what a time

the thing is this wasn't an isolated incident of absolutely buckwild kawaii nazi behavior, it was just the most visibly offline incident. a lot of people who still hate hetalia in year of our lord 2k22 do so because we were in fandom spaces during all of that, and there's nothing anyone can do to convince us that sane fans exist and aren't just faking it, laying in wait to bust out nazi-germany-kun.

if you kept up with the youtube cosplay scene (there were many accounts for characters back then) a lot of it was super cringe. either white kids pretending to be asian or the weird nazi/soviet/whatever larping. i liked this one channel but it was just some european girl cosplaying ukraine doing cooking videos.

I was at that convention. it wasn't outside a Holocaust museum, it was at the Prudential Center in Boston. it was a horrible enough act already, don't make it worse.
