if so, white people finding it gauche to panhandle to pay for a big party that isn't necessary to get married (in the middle of a pandemic and war crisis that are probably going to lead into another recession) might be the only correct take white people have had since the beginning of time

People had wartime weddings during every war in history.

People got married when the polio vaccine was still in the works. They got married when typhoid and cholera and TB were everyday realities. Hell, I bet there were even weddings during the Black Plague.

A small, probably outdoor wedding with a price tag under 5k is entirely reasonable in a world where movie theatres and gyms are still open amidst a pandemic. If you don't think the art the person is selling is any good, no one's making you buy it or do anything else to fund the wedding.

You're starting to sound like the fiancée's jilted ex who's desperate for the wedding not to happen in a 90s romcom.

or it was a hyperbolic joke trying to point out how ridiculous it is to care about someone else pays for their wedding or demand they not do fun things because the world is shit.

if they're scamming for fake commissions, just say that. whatever they're spending the money on doesn't matter.
