OP clearly has never walked a pretty dog in a public space

it's canon that my character loves dogs, walking a dog is a great way to have my character want to talk to yours

i love pet threads tbh. i think as long as the player is astute enough and avoids them taking over the entire thread, it's fine, and is indeed a good CR hook. the trick is that it leads to a hook with the character, not the pet, which again is a nuance some people tend to miss.

unfortunately this describes way too many animal threads i've seen. so many bad rpers use cute animals as a crutch that i avoid them unless i already have cr with a character.

I can get not wanting to play a whole thread cooing over dogs, but it really is a convenient cr starter. Some characters who wouldn't bother approaching others out of the blue might be more inclined if they want to pet the dog or if the dog steals something of theirs or even if they're there to tell the owner to piss off because nobody cares about their pets.

It's a great way for CR good or bad! "Hey! Your dog pissed on my rose bush! Stop letting it do that!"
