pretty sure they don't even watch and are just shit stirring. there's a few things that are jarring if you're a canon snob but the show itself makes sense in its own context and nothing they've done is actually bad

unless you're a canon snob

The Gandalf reveal was pretty bad and a huge missed opportunity to build on the lack of definitive canon around the blue wizards, but that was about it.

Fhag and the Hobbits being shoehorned in are my only real complaints.

ngl finding it really strange too. we're normalizing people exporting the burden of 'proof' that someone is worth their time. you're the one approaching their top level: if you want further details about the character or canon to help narrow down your starter, by all means, ask. if they take an innocent inquiry poorly or refuse to answer it, they're 100% the asshole. but it's not on them to try to lure you in by preparing character blurbs, or putting character bios in their journal, or — like i've seen a few times — sample threads so people can evaluate if you match up to their writing requirements.

you need to understand that most people hit up memes and bakerstreet because they want low-stress, low-stakes, quick and easy rp. if they wanted the formality of a peer review process before getting to tag, they'd be in a game.

i feel like this is one of those popular 'unpopular' opinions, because ime, most people are chill about it and agree with you, but there's this vocal minority that try to make it seem like it's a bigger deal than it is.

this expenditure of time like it's money or worth something and someone stole from you because you 'wasted' effort in top leveling them or writing a starter or thinking about doing something with them and they're somehow entitled to be owed something for it... it's a really not okay mindset and a signature of severe entitlement to me. i have rpd in games and memes and games are high-effort in comparison. you need your app, you need to maintain adherence to the rules and to cr lines and investment of time and making sure you're not dragging people along. you agree to that mindset and that investment by apping in and playing. memes? fuck that noise. there are fifty different versions of some characters and not all of them are going to be the very best/ic versions and maybe some people don't care about that because it's just fun and they're having fun in a place meant for it.

not to mention that time is a false construct made expressly by humans, as is currency, to add measure and metric and worth to something that absolutely no one has control over. so waste your time or don't, but don't put that on the people doing what they're allowed to do in a way they're allowed to do it in a space meant for just such a purpose because they're not conforming to your (complainant's) standard that is, let's be real, different for every complainant.

Re: +1

look, i get you. i do. let's say i see the eighth iteration of greg on a meme and i love gregs and want to tag all the gregs. so i go check their preferences because not all gregs like playing with sandy or shipping with sandy and are very pro-patrick. that's fine, but i generally prefer to know before i tag so i don't waste my time. but this greg's journal is the default layout with no posts or they have a placeholder that they must have put in when they made the journal six years ago and never bothered to actually fill out, so it's just uselessly there. i get a name (greg), but i have no idea if they like tagging sandy or patrick or cast or cross canon at all.

what do i do? i put up a 'hey, just seeing if you'd like my sandy for xyz or 123. if you've got another preference, just let me know. i'm perfectly happy to write a starter, but just wanted to check in with you first. cheers.'

one of three things will happen. 1) i get ignored. 2) i get a 'no thank you, i don't like sandy's rly'. 3) i get a 'yeah! i'd love to, go right ahead!' (followed by either them ghosting the starter or replying back, it's a coin flip on that any time)

if you can't handle one of those three things happening, don't bother playing with any new people ever. because even with a journal full of info that lets you know all the relevant things that you want to pick over to decide yes, yes, this greg above all others is the one you want to throw your sandy at, they still might not tag you back. for any number of reasons. ones i probably haven't included too (which might lean towards they've seen your sandy and don't like it/you).

you're not in the wrong for wanting info (which you can always find out if you google, like others have mentioned), but even with it and opting to tag, you're not entitled to anyone tagging you back. and it feels like people that get this mad over "BUT THE INFO" are also the kind to get upset if they don't get tagged back. you're allowed to be picky but they aren't? maybe they just aren't as invested in pimping their character out as you are. oh darn. move on and find the ninth greg.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2022-10-16 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
this exactly. there's an implicit level of entitlement from people who wants blurbs, or info, or applications, or sample threads, or an entire CV and 14 references. i'm open to tags, but i'm not desperate for them. chances are, if you're so adverse to communication that asking a question cripples you, we probably wouldn't get on anyway. and that's perfectly okay, there're plenty of fish in this sea for both of us.

these are a lot of assumptions about a basic request for more info. i don't think anyone is asking for all of this?

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2022-10-16 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
they aren't and the fact that people are investing this much effort in trying to pick apart a small complaint is baffling.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2022-10-16 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
which is also fair, but like, maybe someone made a journal mostly to tag out and they throw up a top level just for shits and giggles or to see if people who are canon familiar want to play with their blorbo while they expend more effort in tagging out than trying to lure people in. it's not a crime or a bad thing if people don't care enough to fill out their profile/journal with details passersby might want to peruse to give them info on if they want to tag or not. would it be nice for you, the peruser? sure. is it required? no.

honestly, all this thread is teaching me is that there are people that seem to want to just be mad about rp dying because they have no threads but they outright refuse to take a chance and just tag because... why?

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2022-10-16 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
that's not the sense i got from this minor gripe at all, and it's a little weird you're reading that from it and immediately taking this defensive position

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2022-10-16 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah. speaking from experience, I've personally gotten a lot more interest and viable threading by including more information* on my character, so at the very least it doesn't hurt.

*note: i don't expect other people to do this, it's just what works for ne

wgar

where did you get any of this

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2022-10-16 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
look, i think if anything this thread proves is that people have different mentalities when top leveling. some think someone who top levels has a duty to maximize the breadth of the net they're casting to entice tag-ins by supplying info and preferences. ultimately, the goal of listing this information is to make it easier for perfect strangers to tag you.

meanwhile, others are okay being more casual and just taking requests for info if/when they come. these people prefer direct communication and to talk specifics on a case-by-case basis.

the difference stems a little from how seriously you take memes, and probably there's a level of incompatibility there between the two camps.
