i know the point of the story but by the time we get the whole story they already made me not like ishgard for multiple reasons so by the end i could give a fuck if it's saved or not i kinda feel bad for the dragons lol

nothing's wrong with Lyse, she's just in the unfortunate position of being given spotlight for an expansion which means she gets shit from people who are hyper-critical of everything she does while they'd be 100% okay with it if it was a hot dude doing it instead

I'll try to be light on spoilers but some stuff she gets shit for:
- suddenly turning "boring" and "humorless" while she was "fun" before
- stealing spotlight from their precious WoL and taking credit for things WoL did except, you know, that's bullshit because she never does that
- becoming the new resistance leader which means she cheated and didn't deserve the position and got it only because of who her dad was - something which the game explicitly points out, saying she's a figurehead for the resistance to rally under but I guess that means she's a bad character now?
- speaking of being a bad character, later on she does something that's stupid because of her inexperience and idealism and Lyse haters lost their shit over this, calling her an awful character because apparently having realistic flaws is bad writing now?

My issue with Lyse is that she's kind of boring, but it's even worse because M'naago is right there and actually looks like she's from Ala Mhigo. Instead, we have to have the blonde, blue-eyed white girl be the resistance leader because none of the brown people can help themselves, I guess.

it's less that there's a problem with lyse specifically and more that the overall writing in stormblood just wasn't that good imo. like, the worldbuilding and the lore bits were great and i really loved all of the things it added to the world, but the plot itself was just sort of... meh.

The RL development reason for Lyse and Minfillia looking the way they do doesn't make it not super unfortunate.

The weird thing is that they went out of their way to make Lyse's dad dark skinned in a flashback when they had the perfect chance to explain it right then.

They also could have made Ala Mhigo have more than 2 light skinned people in it that it wouldn't be out of place for Lyse to look like she does instead they made almost every other background NPC dark skinned and left the blonde main characters blonde and out of place.

Don't pretend like there isn't a huge white savior narrative in the fucking blue mage storyline that came out in Stormblood too.

it's not the age that's the problem, anon. it's how that player and others like them don't play these characters with any semblance of their original selves and only use them as a vehicle for a kink. dwrp has always side-eyed players who treat canon personality as optional.

stormblood suffered from a lot of bad writing for the leader characters: hien was extremely half-hearted about the whole deal from the start and it really makes you question why he was necessary, when any other person in doma was desperate for change. He does not properly understand his people, which makes you question why he had to be the character to lead them. it didn't help he dropped a line that was very rape-apologist regarding another NPC.

Lyse meanwhile was extremely tone-deaf about the concept of what 20 years of occupation does to a nation and while she did learn eventually, it got grating after awhile. she was also too young to remember much about ala mhigo prior to her family fleeing it, so she knows very little about the country. her being white passing doesn't help.

Overall there are a lot of criticisms about stormblood that primarily boil down to the 'good guy' characters aren't particularly compelling for the player to feel for in regards to the conflict the expac presents. They have almost zero emotional stakes in the plot themselves besides nostalgia, as they were both outsiders of their own countries for decades prior to the game taking place.

this is also the person who said they dislike mixing horror and comedy themes on EMP, and that they don't like character death, AND that they dislike dice rolls. they were on the last TDM too, but i was hoping they'd decided against it given...everything about their preferences.

this is exactly why suitability is a really useful app question/disclaimer

alas one of the downsides of having such an easy app is that people who can't get into games with higher standards will apply even if they dislike the premise
