(Anonymous) 2022-09-06 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)I think they came out of the fact that every game used to be some variation on city life. People got bored with that and it also became frustrating to play proactive characters in settings where they couldn't do anything but futilely try to find a way out or surrender and become apathetic. As our playerbase got older and more experienced we started to want more satisfying storytelling and opportunities for character arcs instead of just a big jar of characters to shake around and see how they interact.
Tabletop is fun, but not everyone has access to a consistent tabletop group and part of the appeal of DWRP is the ability to play fandom characters instead of OCs. It'd be nice if smaller plot-heavy games could get off the ground and last for a decent amount of time, but ime people put them on the backburner for larger games or get cold feet about apping.
