While 'they' is used as a personal pronoun by some people, it's also a group pronoun. "Sam, Heather, Ian, and Trevor are on the swim team, so they need to go to practice today" is not misgendering Same, Heather, Ian, and Trevor, it's talking about all four of them at once.

Which is what is happening here. Multiple people were being talked about at once. 'They' is not misgendering anyone if it's being used to talk about multiple people at once.
