tl;dr: bad art isn't worth $5 and working for $5 isn't worth it, so if you suck don't sell commissions and if you think someone else sucks don't suggest they charge less than minimum wage

the big issue was that varian was already in a ship with ruby, but the player clearly wanted to ship with fern more once the idea came up. instead of being upfront and telling ruby's player, they offered a poly ship that ruby was slowly frozen out of until the player gave up and dropped the ship.

iirc the last straw was when varian was seriously injured during a plot and fern threatened to kill ruby if she came to see him before he recovered. fern's player was really mean to ruby's player on plurk, too.

it wasn't "fern will kill ruby if she comes near varian," it was "fern's pet wolf will kill ruby if she comes near varian, because the wolf is a good judge of character and can sense that ruby is a bad person." which i personally think is even worse.

I can't remember the last time I payed less than $80 for a full body with flat colors. If someone's art is awful but they're only charging $40, I don't see the issue.

personally, i never understood just how they played fern so straight in terms of characterization, how he was constantly angsting over his existence and having an existential crisis over what being a person actually meant and threatening to kill people as a solution to his problems. i honestly thought, being canonblind, that adventure time was some sort of dnd inspired animated fantasy show. it was only later on i found it was basically the kind of thing you only watched and found hilarious when you were stoned and fern was basically this weird crack character. it was as if someone took twilight sparkle from mlp or meg from family guy and played her absolutely straight with all the trauma she'd experienced over the years as being a legit part of her characterization and claimed it led her to have ptsd or something.

just a very bizarre choice as i can think of a dozen other characters that come from canons that actually explore those issues for the angst factor and would still be all cutesy like pan wanted. but then maybe they wouldn't have pulled off the excuse that this was all just how fern acted in canon for so long.

i feel this in my bones. i do needlework as a hobby (crochet/knitting/cross stitch, am also considering embroidery too) and i would never consider to try to monetize it because people expect it to be a fraction of the price for the work i do. for instance: $100, maybe $200 for a afghan blanket that takes at least 100 hours to do. and that’s not factoring in the price of the fiber, because nice, high quality yarn is usually at least $15 for a skein.

i’m not even that great at it, just average. i’ve had people get upset when they want me to make something for them and offer to pay me but even when given a lowball estimate they say they could get something better quality at a lower price. which is true because mass production allows that, and i’m not knocking it because i enjoy having nice bedsheets without bankrupting myself. however i am not a machine and i am not going to undervalue my time just because you can buy a knitted throw from anthropologie for $100

the guy that originally coined the term also coined it because he met trans lesbians/bi women that were uninterested in whether or not he (and men in general) found them attractive, which he could not phantom. so it was specifically about trans women that weren't into men.

tbf they aren’t incorrect in playing it straight because adventure time does follow through with that plot line for the finale, fern actually joins the enemy because of his resentment towards finn and wanting to kill and replace him so he’s the real finn. but the series also balances it out with a lot of goofy silly stuff too so fern isn’t always like this all of the time. and in the end it’s still a children’s show and while fern ends up dying he’s reconciled with finn and is at peace with it.

that said the fern played sounds completely ooc, like they took certain traits and then wildly exaggerated them.
