oh yeah i wholeheartedly agree with you on the first part. some authors use writing as a means of expressing their own experiences in life, and sometimes those themes resonate with readers. i read a book recently that heavily featured a protagonist suffering from depression and suicidal ideations that i'd be nervous to being to rp, but when reading it in a novel form, it feels different.

mind you i don't mind those same themes coming up in my threads. it just usually has to be someone i am ooc comfortable to be writing that stuff with. and i think that's what distinguishes the two experiences for me. heavy themes can be cathartic for both sides, but it's usually better when everyone is on the same page. if your character trauma dumps on someone they just met or seems uncomfortable with that subject matter (and i have known players who have), it's probably best to step off.

i don't even think the character needs to be a backwater asshole for this to be awkward

i played a character once who wasn't sexist or a bigot, but tended to get shy and tongue-tied around girls. if his male best friend is being played as a trans man, and they've known each other for a long time, then i would've had to ask questions like "how did he react to his friend's coming out?" and "did he used to be shy around him/did he have an awkward crush on him back when he thought he was a girl?"

oh god, don't tell me you would have had to do some minor character development and make him slightly less than a perfect ic clone

having to completely overhaul a canon relationship isn't minor

working out if your character had a crush on his best friend when they were younger isn't a complete overhaul. just answer the question "no" and "he was fine with him coming out" if you don't want to explore it further.

if you're playing in an rp game you can guarantee they're going to have experiences in the game that will change them as a character way more than their bestie being trans. i don't get the fear of stepping outside of what canon tells you. if you can't answer those questions you probably don't have a good grasp of the character to begin with.
