it's a little of column a, little of column b tbqh. i thought back and in retrospect some of them had said some weirdly off things while also espousing progressive views, but some of them were 100% progressive but got into the idea of having a "community" where the community is basically progressives who go full flat earth about politics and wind up conspiracy theorists nationalists or something

i used to think it was that old truism about some people becoming more conservative with age, but i noticed it happened to literally nobody i knew who didn't squat on twitter all day long

see, i stop short of calling anything like that canon simply because i've run into situations where something i thought was clearly implied by canon turned out not to be the case after all/to be a red herring/etc. it's the sort of thing that can cause problems if you state it as being fact on an app, so i always just make very clear that while it's heavily implied by canon, it is not in fact official canon just so no one can point fingers at me if something comes out later to contradict it.

Oh, that makes a lot of sense! I was thinking more of long-standing canons where it's been implied long enough to assume it, but yeah red herrings are a thing.

i hope you realize that the main problem with all of this is the word being used. it's an incorrect term, transphobia. same with homophobia. the phobia aspect slams a lot more connotation to it than it should hold. not liking something doesn't make you phobic of it. neither does disagreeing with it. or just 'not feeling it'. all of that is suddenly slapped with a word that makes it a much bigger thing than it is, and imo, that's the problem. "i don't want to date/sleep with a transwoman who doesn't want to go through gender reassignment surgery because i'm a lesbian/cis straight male who doesn't engage with penises. that doesn't make me phobic of penises. i just don't want to involve any other than my own/none at all in my sexual activities." that shouldn't be a hot take or a gotcha used by bad faith actors who just want to scream about how they're being repressed because the person whose genitals they want to touch doesn't want to touch the genitals they have.

it's not transphobia to not agree or not want to interact, and i wish to fucking christ that in this pedantic day and age of 'wOrDs mAtTeR!!11!', those terms would be clarified and changed to something different. i'm tired of the argument going in circles when someone says something, the accusation of phobia is hurled, and then the argument devolves from there into they're not phobic, they just (insert thing here). it's a valid argument but as there's no other term aside from intolerance and bigotry which also don't necessarily align either in certain scenarios, it's just this circle of hell of circular arguments.

exactly! i was getting definite trans vibes from madeline as i was playing through the game so having the creator confirm that madeline was in fact trans and was a representation of her own gender journey was awesome validation. i would have said that even before the confirmation, a trans reading of madeline was totally valid and should be allowed in games because it's just so there in the text itself.

tbh everyone's kind of overlapping points with each other that it ends up looking too much like one end or another because a lot of those points are very dependent on the situation:

not-transphobic
- choosing not to smut with characters whose genitals you do not wish to engage with, but will play gen with them
- being wary of someone whose gender interpretation from the tdm changes to the game without any indication in the app
- being wary of anyone who makes clearly cis characters into trans without justification

transphobic
- immediately calling it fetishizing to make a character trans just because they heacanon them as trans
- justifying how the default will always be cis even if nothing in canon disproves the trans headcanon either
- assuming anyone who has a trans headcanon is going to make them angsty and focus on gender dysphoria
- assuming anyone who has a trans headcanon is a fetishist or using it as therapy

go touch grass
- assuming everyone who doesn't agree with a trans headcanon (even when canon proves it's wrong) is transphobic
- acting like you have to interact with characters who you probably didn't even know existed before this thread occurred
