so clearly the devs have to be lazy stupid fucks for not prioritizing doing this instead of wasting time on dumb things like stopping courts from nuking dreamwidth's degenerate unholy content from the internet next year????

tbh I am genuinely understanding of this policy when it comes to accounts that have been used literally at all, ever. a single journal entry. some icons. something.

but there are so many hoarded accounts that have literally never been updated or personalized in any way, shape, or form. I'd really, really like to see those accounts cleared away. maybe in a year if they're not verified; give them as long as 5 or even 10 years if they are. but "never" because "what if someone wasn't able to use their account and it was gone when they came back :(" just doesn't make sense for accounts that were never personalized to begin with.

yeah, yeah, usernames aren't all that big a deal at the end of the day, but it does indeed bum me out to think of something really snappy for a character and find that whoever registered it isn't even getting the enjoyment of it.

is dreamwidth as a site even big enough to comparably count as that kind of company

i'm not gonna say you're telling on yourself for not knowing anything about coding because it's okay to not know anything about coding and most people probably don't, but they already have parameters for unverified journals plus date of creation

except most of the one word usernames that everyone wants have been verified and used with icons, though it might have been years ago

they really haven't. every time i pick up a new character, especially from a popular canon, i run across 2011-2014 accounts that are one word that haven't even been verified. no name for the character. no icons. base journal. just the journal creation process. there's a huge swatch of journals that were 'sniped' when the move from lj to dw took place, some of them from people that didn't want people they didn't like having those usernames on a new site. it was a free for all during the first couple years. and then they all went flat. i could probably go look up handfuls of one word usernames if i were so inclined. a lot of it was just petty, snipey shit. a small portion is 'i lost my drive but i might be back later'.
