the coding for it is easy though

i'm not gonna say you're telling on yourself for not knowing anything about coding because it's okay to not know anything about coding and most people probably don't, but they already have parameters for unverified journals plus date of creation

except most of the one word usernames that everyone wants have been verified and used with icons, though it might have been years ago

they really haven't. every time i pick up a new character, especially from a popular canon, i run across 2011-2014 accounts that are one word that haven't even been verified. no name for the character. no icons. base journal. just the journal creation process. there's a huge swatch of journals that were 'sniped' when the move from lj to dw took place, some of them from people that didn't want people they didn't like having those usernames on a new site. it was a free for all during the first couple years. and then they all went flat. i could probably go look up handfuls of one word usernames if i were so inclined. a lot of it was just petty, snipey shit. a small portion is 'i lost my drive but i might be back later'.

it's the unverified ones that get me

like i can understand claiming the journal and then losing your drive or not getting a chance to use it like you thought you would or whatever, but how hard is it to click the link in the email that they send you moments after you hit the submit button

were these journals claimed by some of those people who went into the military and thought of the perfect one-word name for their naruto journal literal seconds before they encountered a bunch of terrorists and had to start shooting

that hasn't been my experience
