that depends entirely on the animal though. hitting a deer can absolutely be deadly for a driver, it's much safer to try to swerve to avoid one than it is to just hit it.

i hope a moose crosses their street one day. those buggers will fuck a car up more than anything else.

yeah, it's very obvious that anyone who says 'oh you should just hit it' doesn't live somewhere where deer or moose are a thing. they can total your car if not outright kill you.

i mean no one is saying not to swerve for a deer or a moose but you shouldn't potentially kill yourself or others for something like a chipmunk or a fox

even hitting a fox can be dangerous, though, because driving over even a fairly small object at a high rate of speed can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. there are plenty of stories of people who wrecked their cars because something fell off a car in front of them and they ended up driving over it and lost control as a result.

no kidding but the idea isn't to just barrel straight into something either. "swerve" implies cutting the wheel one way or another enough that you are no longer maintaining your lane. you can swerve a little or a lot but you are still abruptly changing direction and the key part is that you're no longer maintaining your lane. this is the part that causes you to hit a tree or hit other drivers.

you can attempt to avoid hitting a small animal by slowing down to hopefully give it time to get clear or trying to avoid it going directly under your wheels while still maintaining your lane.

you obviously need to swerve if it's something large because it can total your car and kill you. you need to get out of your lane to try to avoid it.

the point is that it's better to make a smaller, safer correction and potentially still end up hitting the fox because you grazed it then it is to go from 0 to panic just to make sure you avoid it and end up flipping your car over in the process

maybe don't drive at a high rate of speed in areas heavily populated by wild animals.
