yeah, it's very obvious that anyone who says 'oh you should just hit it' doesn't live somewhere where deer or moose are a thing. they can total your car if not outright kill you.

i mean no one is saying not to swerve for a deer or a moose but you shouldn't potentially kill yourself or others for something like a chipmunk or a fox

even hitting a fox can be dangerous, though, because driving over even a fairly small object at a high rate of speed can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. there are plenty of stories of people who wrecked their cars because something fell off a car in front of them and they ended up driving over it and lost control as a result.

no kidding but the idea isn't to just barrel straight into something either. "swerve" implies cutting the wheel one way or another enough that you are no longer maintaining your lane. you can swerve a little or a lot but you are still abruptly changing direction and the key part is that you're no longer maintaining your lane. this is the part that causes you to hit a tree or hit other drivers.

you can attempt to avoid hitting a small animal by slowing down to hopefully give it time to get clear or trying to avoid it going directly under your wheels while still maintaining your lane.

you obviously need to swerve if it's something large because it can total your car and kill you. you need to get out of your lane to try to avoid it.

the point is that it's better to make a smaller, safer correction and potentially still end up hitting the fox because you grazed it then it is to go from 0 to panic just to make sure you avoid it and end up flipping your car over in the process

maybe don't drive at a high rate of speed in areas heavily populated by wild animals.

where do you live that doesn't have any wild animals I just wanna know

da most cities and populated areas? i've been driving for over fifteen years and have only had one or two memorable encounters with an animal in the road that wasn't already run over and in both cases i never hit the animal or swerved off the road

i live in a rural area now and have for several years and still never had an animal encounter on the road

the better question is where do you live that animals are constantly in the road and why aren't you slowing down in those areas if that's the case

There's really no excuse for people assuming all their experiences are universal like this anymore. The internet has been a thing for so long. You're on it as we speak. Begging you to broaden at least one horizon.

the question was where are there no animals and i answered it. you're the one who assumed that i meant it was it universal

again, if you have a ton of animals in the road where you live then you should slow down it's not that hard

yeah my mistake for thinking people aren't going to be pedantic

don't slow down and hit everything then idfc

if you insist on driving way under the speed limit then you're just creating a different kind of danger

i live in one of the biggest cities in the united states but on the edges where there is still plenty of wildlife, because get this: this is where they live. there is no neighborhood for deer that commutes to the city, wild boar are a active threat, and coyotes will carry off small pets if you’re not careful.

the fact you’re still seeing animals run over on the road despite having never experienced it doesn’t really help your point either.

+1

I'm pretty far into the suburbs of a major city, and we've got at least one herd of deer that just chill out in the strip of woods between the apartments and the highway. I've seen them in the road a number of times, and standing beside the road looking like they might cross is a weekly thing at least.

the point was never that there are NO animals, although rereading the comment i originally replied to i can see how you might've taken that fucking literally.

the point is that animal encounters are UNCOMMON in enough places that in years of daily driving that it's possible not to find yourself in this situation

obviously anything can happen at any time, but that's why they have signage in areas with a higher likelihood of encountering deer and you should slow down and stay alert if you're in an area you suspect more wildlife or pets could potentially run into the road

i am terrified at how little you evidently pay attention to the road

wherever you live i hope it is far fucking away from me

Re: PLURK PET PEEVES

uncommon is still not that fucking rare. i live in a suburban rural area and i would say that means having several animal encounters a year instead of daily. i have accidentally come face to face with a wild feline predator on a walk, i’ve seen rabbits on the side of the road, turkeys standing in the street threatening cars, snakes, coyotes, foxes, quails, raccoons coming out of storm drains and that one time there was one standing on its hind legs and screaming in our backyard during the middle of the night for some reason.

if i were to slow down because i suspect there is wildlife around, i would be driving 5mph everywhere.

animals in the road on my 10-minute drive home from work today: 1 chipmunk, 3 squirrels, 1 flock of wild turkeys

you'd see a lot more animals if you go outside where they tend to hang out

stay in your basement all day, no wonder you think "most populated areas" are lifeless wastelands
