i know people use shonen as an umbrella term for genre, but it's actually a demographic that says more about the audience it's aimed at, so i guess anything could fall under shonen as long as it's being published in a shonen magazine

It's a seinen. All the blood and limb-loss in the manga is a good sign of that. Shounen can't be nearly as outright gory.

deadman wonderland was considered shounen and it's one of the goriest mangas i've ever read this side of actual horror mangas
