Every meme is flopping lately, what's going on?

it's january. everyone is either sick or exhausted or burned out from all the shit in the news. or they've been fucked by the fires/snow/heat/storms. most of the people on my plurk list are barely tagging and when they are it looks like they're just cherry picking older threads.

can we stop with the five million bullshit excuses for why people aren't doing their tags

the people who actually want to rp just rp. if you don't feel like doing your tags unless mercury is in retrograde and the ambient temperature is 72-75 degrees then you aren't really interested in rping, you're just interested in the idea of it.

yes people who have covid or are without power or had to evacuate their house due to fires are just making up bullshit excuses, you've really cracked the case.

+0.5 on this one. i'm sure not everyone is casually making up bullshit but ayrt is also right that there's a not insignificant subset of chronically flaking rpers who haven't come to terms about their real interest or availability and who invoke every excuse in the book why the stars didn't align to 'press comment' this month (either).

most of them suck. like 5-6 samey fantasy romance marriage memes were posted this week

posting 8 shitty memes a day over and over

starting from yesterday:

- "wake up to you" is a very thinly-veiled repost of morning-after and there's someone in my bed

- "marriage meme" boring

- "once more, with feeling!" doesn't even mean anything if you're skimming, the gif doesn't help, and the premise as written is overly wordy as well as inherently crack, which isn't popular anymore

- "dark romance" is very broad for skimmers and has also never been popular, maybe for that reason

- "first meetings" has a few threads going, but "first" anything memes are usually unpopular

- "bodyshare meme" crack, see above

- "fuck marry kill" has threads

- "horny confessions" has basically always flopped, if i remember right

- "unsent texts" seems to be doing fine

- "not so happily married" never does numbers, continues to get reposted

- "pros and cons of dating your character" has threads

- "room you can't leave until you x" has some interest checks (though as a meme scientist phd i'd say it probably suffers from attracting people who want smut but can't tell if they'd look like cockhops if they tried that angle with otas)

- "IC testimonials" is one of those annoying memes where you basically don't have to be IC, i don't know how other people feel about those but i skip them automatically

- "romantasy" is extremely broad for skimmers, image doesn't make it interesting

- "love from afar" sounds like a drabble not a thread

- "favorite part" has threads

- "winter fluff" has gotten reposted a lot recently, and any meme explicitly called 'something fluff' is usually stagnant

- "i'd date that" has threads, i'm sorry to report

- "stray" has threads

- "massive smut starters" has threads

- "enemies to lovers" has threads

- "extreme weather" has flopped every time so far, probably because it doesn't really facilitate shoving characters together

- "shippy & smutty questions" has threads

yes, those memes are being posted specifically to exclude you poor asexys and make you feel bad. everything is about you. you connected the dots, you cracked the code

It always proves why less is more. Nobody wants to rp in those YA Reylo knockoff memes like dark romance or romantasy, you can get that in other memes. Being more specific narrows down your options. Same with extreme weather, it's too specific. You can write the same thing in the rain meme, or heatwave meme, or winter memes, and if it's "characters are stuck together because of the weather" you already have memes like the body heat one so people would just go to that. Meme creators need to actually stop being this specific with memes because it never works.
