I am talking about you being on the internet, typing full words, and you know it. do not be a fucking pedant as a gotcha, it's not cute.

please explain to me, oh enlightened and superior autistic person, what is the "polite" way to differentiate between "can hold down a stable job but struggles with emotional regulation/social cues and needs medication" and "nonverbal, non-typing individual who needs a round-the clock caretaker to feed, clothe, and administer medications"

answer quickly because i am describing to you my actual lived experience

i mean it's fine to state support needs you literally just did that and so did i. it is best to make a good faith assumption that anyone can have any support needs and provide solid support to everyone. functional labels are bad for EVERYONE not just "level 1"s. i don't think people aren't nonverbal or that people like me don't exist

it's more idealism to not want functional labels than some kind of denial we should all be supported

we don't live in a world where that's realistic. we live in a world where we need ways to get you and me the support we both need at the different levels that we need it, and we don't accomplish that by pretending like we live in a fully accommodating, understanding society.

you wouldn't have access to support without this diagnosis and structure for that support wouldn't exist without identifying patterns of presentation.

ok but do you see the problem here? "high support needs" and "low support needs" are still labels. they are in no way functionally different from "level 1, 2, 3" or even the much-derided "high-functioning" and "low-functioning," and every time we find a new, "better" label the community still eventually moves the goalposts again to "no, you can't say that"

it's negging people out of the necessary language to be able to advocate for theirs or their loved ones' needs and creating a community where the dominant voices are almost never those who need higher levels of support, pushing them of the public eye by *not letting anyone talk about it* so we get a general public that *doesn't realise they exist*

this right here. there's a shockingly large portion of the autistic community that wants to shove people with high support needs into a closet and pretend they don't exist, so a lot of people never even realize that autism can look like that because the only people with autism they ever see are the ones who have low support needs and thus often don't come across as having a disability. this is a BAD THING for everyone.

do... do you not realize that functional labels exist for multiple disabilities/diseases/disorders besides just autism, anon? like, they're a commonly used thing for a reason.
