i think it's because i was very similar to finn. shitty home life, parents who wouldnt miss me if i was gone, desperate to live anywhere else and willing to do about anything. she had "rules for strays" if she was going to let me run away to her place.

they're not defending second, they're saying that talking about sending the parents screencaps, years and years after the events in question, when we are anonymous internet strangers, is a traumatizing and violating thing to do to people.

IF there was a time to do so it was when the events were happening, which is also true of the police. That was the time it was most likely to result in anything.

Like, the internet has done this before. Anyone who's seen criticisms of the true crime community has seen discussions of the upsetting ways strangers talk to the families of those involved. Unless and until we as strangers see proof that the family is actively asking for more information, then we're just internet trolls to them and approaching them would in fact be a shitty thing to do.

polite reminder that finn was in canada and second was in the states. and finn went out on their own and wandered off and was found by himself. second might have been a part of what happened, but you can't charge someone for murder when someone commits suicide or has a mental health crisis and you're not even in the same country.

not me sticking up for second. she's reprehensible. but this topic was hashed over repeatedly, and very vehemently when the situation occurred. this true crimes dig up of it almost a decade later. i feel sorry for finn's family. i feel disgusted that this occurred within the community. but the authorities were made aware of everything at the points of contact with finn's family. this feels like someone trying to get off on 'solving the case' or something they have zero reason to be a part of. please just let the poor boy rest, let his family have some peace, and let's collectively keep second out of dwrp.

and in checking to be sure i had the almost a decade part right, i came across an old thread that brings up the news article that said they weren't even sure it was suicide. some people like to force that it was, but they went out properly dressed. they didn't wander off in their pjs in the snow. there's a lot of misinformation about what happened and people have forgotten the actual facts and have run with the glorified version in their head.
