Fucking history/background/settings sections! Of course I know why they're necessary, but god I hate writing out a comprehensive description of my OC's homeworld, social standing, etc.
I don't so much mind it when my character's from a completely different setting, but if they're from the 'normal' world, it's just as annoying as all fuck.
Well, for ocs, it more becomes a biography section, since most of those are usually covered by canon background/world settings.
So you do the whole 'this is their origin/where they came from', which is made pretty boring if they're not a powered/altered character. Basically school, homelife, etc.
It's a bit argh inducing since it's hard not to add some personality in there, which needs to go and fill out the personality section, which gets mixed up with a little background... so you wind up with this muddled thing that can be hard to differentiate between the two unless you re-read it and cut and chop to make the history/background section more clinical and the personality section less so.
They're a pain, but it's more frustrating when you've written them out and then a game goes LOL no we just have background, please integrate it into that.
I HAVE THOUSANDS OF WORDS ON THIS WORLD SO PEOPLE KNOW WTF I'M ON ABOUT, WHY DO YOU NOT HAVE A SECTION FOR THIS SHIT. /flips tables.
Doesn't stop me from writing out a default for the usual sections when making the character though. Usual meaning world, history, personality, appearance.
I wish OCs weren't allowed in panfandom games. I know most OC only games are a shithole, but I feel like even well-written OCs come off as really different than canon characters. Just because there's a difference playing someone else's character and playing your own. Plus, because no one knows a damn thing about them, OC characters always come off as really tryhard since the players are always trying to drag in CR kicking and screaming.
I disagree. I've seen plenty of OCs that come across naturally in how they're played; sometimes I've gone to their journal to find out what canon they're from, only to discover they're original. OC quality depends on where you're looking, but there is no difference between playing someone else's character and playing your own (typically people who make shit OCs play shit canon characters, because both things require understanding of how to forge well rounded personalities and voices. Just because the brickwork is there for canon muses doesn't mean you get to skimp on the work).
I'm curious as to your view of what "dragging in CR kicking and screaming could be", though, considering all CR comes from mutual tagging...
I don't see how 'no one knows a damn thing about them' is a problem when panfandom games can easily get characters from obscure canons. only with ocs you're guaranteed something of a comprehensive wikipedia article right there on the character's journal.
Exactly what I came here to say. If we don't put in twice the work of a canon character, we simply won't get CR. And in a lot of cases, we don't get it anyway. People go in just waiting for OC muns to be the next R or Tally. Very rarely does anyone tag an OC first, and when they do it's usually because they want to fuck the PB.
So if we seem a little tryhard, especially at first, it's because we have a lot of extra representing to do.
