I wish OCs weren't allowed in panfandom games. I know most OC only games are a shithole, but I feel like even well-written OCs come off as really different than canon characters. Just because there's a difference playing someone else's character and playing your own. Plus, because no one knows a damn thing about them, OC characters always come off as really tryhard since the players are always trying to drag in CR kicking and screaming.

I disagree. I've seen plenty of OCs that come across naturally in how they're played; sometimes I've gone to their journal to find out what canon they're from, only to discover they're original. OC quality depends on where you're looking, but there is no difference between playing someone else's character and playing your own (typically people who make shit OCs play shit canon characters, because both things require understanding of how to forge well rounded personalities and voices. Just because the brickwork is there for canon muses doesn't mean you get to skimp on the work).

I'm curious as to your view of what "dragging in CR kicking and screaming could be", though, considering all CR comes from mutual tagging...

I don't see how 'no one knows a damn thing about them' is a problem when panfandom games can easily get characters from obscure canons. only with ocs you're guaranteed something of a comprehensive wikipedia article right there on the character's journal.

I basically treat playing off of an OC like playing off of a character from an obscure canon I don't know anything about.

I'm guessing you don't play OCs. Most of the time where we have to be tryhards to drag in CR kicking and screaming is because of people like you.

Exactly what I came here to say. If we don't put in twice the work of a canon character, we simply won't get CR. And in a lot of cases, we don't get it anyway. People go in just waiting for OC muns to be the next R or Tally. Very rarely does anyone tag an OC first, and when they do it's usually because they want to fuck the PB.

So if we seem a little tryhard, especially at first, it's because we have a lot of extra representing to do.

I disagree, although I think OCs are best in multifandom AU settings, where they can be written to fit the game world.
