When you make a suggestion for the game and that ONE PLAYER freaks out.

Just sit down. it isn't even settled yet.

Dear players,

Read. The. FAQ.

Read it.

READ IT.

I bet that question you're asking about basic game rules is on there.

Spoiler Alert: It is. Has been since the beginning.

And before any of you say it, no they weren't asking for clarity. They just hadn't read the freaking FAQ.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-07 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
other players ignoring the faq and info pages in general is one of my biggest pet peeves. so many assholes expect to be spoonfed answers on plurk when they could find everything they're looking for by just skimming the faq.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-08 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
sorry, but if there's pages and pages of comments from a year and a half ago asking shit that isn't updated on the faq itself, I'm asking my question. the faq page should be an organized place to find information, pages of comments are not. so either update the faq page and delete the questions as they're answered or deal with repeat questions.

why are you assuming it wasn't actually in the body of the FAQ

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2017-06-08 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
because they want to make excuses for why they never read the fucking faq

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2017-06-08 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
da but seems like they're just using this thread to call out their game for having a faq that never gets updated

but they should say which game it is, of course, for the full experience

Re: da

faq stands for frequently asked questions. you put up the most frequently asked questions in the main body of the post. if you're going to answer questions in the comments, there's no reason to add it all to the faq, otherwise you can potentially wind up with a monster of an faq page that may just break the character count.

if you can't be bothered to go through the comments to see if something close to your question's been asked already, just own that it's on you because you're lazy and not on the game because they're not cramming one-off questions in what is likely an already large faq post.

questions that only relate to very specific situations shouldn't be added, agreed, but questions that seem obvious in retrospect, or ask fundamental things about the nature of the setting, or things like that, should. i've seen at least a few games that let the comments fill up with things like that until they have ten pages of comments with tons of repeats.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2017-06-09 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
and why are there repeats? oh right. because people can't be bothered to read the comments. these are also the same people that don't bother to read the faq.

just read the comments, anon. if the comments aren't screened and the mod answers them, then they're in a readily available place to access. it's official, as the mod has answered them. and if you have 10 pages of comments, even paring it down to non-repeats is going to bulk up the faq page to a ridiculous degree. the basics and game-specific questions should be answered in the body of the post. if people have additional questions, unless they're ones that are super important to gameplay, then just read the fucking comment pages. think of the comments as additional pages. reader reviews. whatever. just because one or two games add every question to the faq doesn't mean all games should have to. it's there. it's unscreened. it's answered. do a little leg work.

idk why you're talking to me like i'm the original person who said that because i already said i'm not, but ok. i do read all the comments, personally, but obviously there are people who don't. telling them to do it anyway won't change that.

i'm intrigued, has any bloated faq page ever broken the dw character limit? dw has pretty dang big limits for entries and comments

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2017-06-09 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
i remember ed's faq page used to be multiple pages. can't speak for other games, but i remember the nightmare of them trying to revamp it one time and how long that took.

the longer a game runs and or the more complex the system, the more questions there will be. it's just not feasible to cram every question in the faq page and it can and often does lead to bloating of the page and losing questions when you don't know what section to put it in. that's why most faq pages have unscreened comments and why mods answer them on the pages. it's an extension of the faq and it's been officially answered. if the comments are only a page or two, it might seem plausible to just add it, but some faq pages are 10+ pages, and yeah, sure, it's a pain to scroll through, but it's just as much of a pain to try to incorporate it into the main page body. depending on how thinly stretched your mod/mod team is, is that really where you want them to spend their time?

You know what I'd like to see games do? Write the faq and then put down a series of top level comments with categories for players to ask about things. Like: world (society, geography, etc) / events / npcs / apps / anything else you can think of.

As seone who never reads the faq comments, that might be a way of helping people find questions addressed by other rpers

(Anonymous) 2017-06-09 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This actually sounds like a good idea. At the very least it'll make hunting for reference info easier.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-09 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I like this

(Anonymous) 2017-06-09 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
.. you never read faq comments? you don't ctrl-f relevant keywords to your question or just skim? seriously?

people like you embarrass me when i see a mod answer something that's been asked multiple times by lazy idiots who can't bother to search themselves and would rather force a mod to take time away from modding and explain something to them. again.

not necessarily a bad idea, but finding things once the threads collapse may be difficult and if the faq sees a lot of use sometimes having that many comments on one page slows down the whole faq

(Anonymous) 2017-06-13 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
actually i think the easiest solution to this would be having a post just for character/canons specific questions, away from the general faq

take those out, and you only get like... two or three comment pages at most of actual game related stuff

(Anonymous) 2017-06-09 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, but my FAQ is updated and all the information is in the body of the FAQ. It's an organized place to find information.

So try again. :]

(Anonymous) 2017-06-11 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
As a mod, YES DEAR GOD read the FAQ. You wake up in a certain place. Why is your character starting somewhere else?

As a player, make sure the FAQ is actually frequently asked questions and not a freaking encyclopedia of the game. I've seem some FAQs that have made me turn away from otherwise awesome sounding games because if I wanted to read a novel, I'd pick up an actual novel. No game is worth that.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
as a player i am always so miffed by people practically explicitly ignoring what the FAQ says

honestly, currently miffed by poking around at plus ultra. "the network is the Real Internet, w/ a 2chan-like board and stuff like that"... but i end up seeing people treat it like a students-only network

and i guess i understand why it's happening but it still bothers me because it's like... guys...

(Anonymous) 2017-06-14 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
that was bothering me too. at least it makes it clear really quickly who's actually paying attention and who isn't worth bothering with, but stuff like this definitely won't help get the non-students/teachers involved or encourage people to app characters outside the school.
