pretty much how i feel about it. also i still don't understand why she would turn to drinking in the first place after seeing firsthand what it did to her mother and being very obviously unhappy about that. or did acknowledging that her mother was a human being who made mistakes and forgiving her for them suddenly also mean she was fine with perpetual drunkness? :/

I think it's a dumb 'development' but that's a pretty weak argument. people do things that their parents did all the time, even if it made them desperately unhappy when their parents did them.

i don't know about other people but for me it's a structural nitpick not a length nitpick. i just really, really, really hate using quotations marks. nothing bothers me more than "...," he said. it's why i love action brackets because i can just describe and then have the dialog without having to work it into its own prose sentence. and if i need to add an adjective like quietly or whispered or gasped or whatever i can still do that in the brackets easily.
Don't lump what good apps have come in with the former Divers.

You really need to stop trying to make this happen. It's not going to work.
Personally, I don't bother with 'he said' or other modifiers like that anymore. They look too silted and weird when... duh your character said it, it was his tag! If I have to describe the tone or anything like if the character is gasping or yelling, I do it in a separate sentence.
I don't see how that's a difference between prose and action brackets. You can work around awkward things like that very easily in both.
