I also despise this greatly because of how condescending it sounds (and yes I am from the south). I realize that mostly it's not meant that way, and I don't mind if it's used jokingly or in a facetious manner, but when they start using it consistently instead of my name that's when I start getting annoyed.
That said, when it started becoming a common thing with plurkers I simply made a blanket plurk stating that I really disliked it and would appreciate it if people didn't do it to me. I was lucky enough to have great people who didn't mind not calling me pet names but considering all the over-sensitive and clingy babies in this hobby I can't tell you you'll have the same experience.

Tropospherical is DW's default layout, and its comments' text is already displaying at only 75% of whatever your browser's default text-size is. Putting text in <small> tags reduces it further. At browser-default 16px, the smalltext in comments ends up being a mere 10px.
Imagine what it ends up being when my default text size is 13px! No, it doesn't render very clearly. Yes, it is difficult to read when it's more than a short sentence or two. Yes, it gives me problems. Yes, I could press control/+ and zoom in, but I don't want to always have to do that just to RP either!
