The people who are objecting to the use of "trigger" as "something that causes a person to have a panic attack" are using the term solely to mean "something that triggers a flashback."

You can't have a flashback to something you haven't experienced. You can experience deep anxiety. That's where the center of this whole "stop misusing the word trigger!" argument lies.

Whether or not people are using the word correctly for something that causes them to have intense panic symptoms, it's still good to try to help people not have panic attacks.
