i'm pretty sure anon above is talking about free viking women in their society, since when they raid the monastery the raiders seem v confused as to why there's no women around
one of the viking men tries to rape a briton woman while on a raid and lagertha (ragnar's wife) wrestles him off of her, only to have him try to rape her instead - she kills him there and when they're back she says it's because he tried to rape her, which is corroborated by a couple of people
Yeah, I've seen the show so I know that, I just wasn't sure if anon was speaking about Vikings in general or just going off what has been seen in the show and was speculating.
I should have been more specific, sorry - the rape of a free woman was a crime in that society, yes, and that's the context in which the punishment for it happens in that episode. The rules were different for foreign women and unfree/thrall women, and iirc that is actually brought up in the show briefly. my bad!!
From Ragnar and Athelstan's conversation, it is illegal to rape a free Viking woman, but permissible to force a slave woman captured in a raid to have sex.
So, yes. There will be rape or attempted rape. But what's shown in this show is a lot more tasteful/tame than what is in say a series like Spartacus.
