Anon, I don't see how this is different than FEA? It's their family and companions from a big bad future. They may not be related in all cases, but there's childhood friends there and people that have fought together, which isn't much different from your list of "ic reasons characters will room together". In the case of big horror game and not knowing what the situation is, it makes sense that the first thing the characters would do is try to get into a more familiar setting and keep their friends close.
I get the annoyance when big casts flood in because it can be overwhelming and obnoxious. I haven't seen them being insular, and I think as a whole they've been doing well tagging out. I admit that as the cast gets bigger that might thin out and I hope it doesn't, but as it stands right now I don't think that's what's happening.
