I have some Zun art for icons on an account of mine, mainly because I like the expression (that and his earlier art is leagues better than what it is now.) I've not found any fanart with the same expressions, so I use what I can get.

Pretty much. Most artists don't give a shit or some of them are kind of hypocrites anyway because they sell their fanart without permission from the original creators of the canon.

there is plenty of extremely beautiful doujinshi you can icon too (which I do often), and the art for some of the official comics isn't half bad either

so that argument doesn't really hold much water here, these people just have shit taste

I make touhou icons, and I'll admit when I first started, I produced a lot of shit quality stuff, so I'm gonna blame some of it on just not knowing how to properly make good icons?

But if we're talking about the TLH/BS Touhou crowd, that's probably because they don't care about good icons and only care about making the character look "sexy" by crusty neckbeard standards. You will generally find a massive improvement in both icon and play quality when you look at game casts. Not always, but in general.

the people who use these icons like the creepy loliface and giant tits and bulging cocks everywhere and tend not to have the social awareness to realize or care about how offputting this kind of stuff is for the typical dwrper (but they'll still complain about nobody wanting to play with them anyway)
