Harry Potter:

Step 1: Have Dumbledore tell Harry exactly why X, Y and Z needs to happen instead of being so ~wise~ and ~eccentrically~ cryptic. Swear to god some deaths would've been preventable if he was straight forward.

Step 2: People calling out Dumbledore on his biases. Yes, Snape is biased, but so is Dumbledore (all those points to Gryffindor, dismissing the fact that Sirius tried to kill Snape via Werewolf).

Step 3: J.K Rowling quit trying to write romance subplots - Harry and Cho, The whole thing with Ginny, Hermoine and Ron, Lupin and Tonks, Snape's torch-holding for Lily, they're all fucking terrible.

Just need to add:

Step 4: Hire Professor Grubbly-Plank on as the Care of Magical Creatures professor full time and make Hagrid her teaching assistant. The man knows magical creatures but has a 3rd year education, a superhuman pain tolerance, and poor judgment when it comes to how safe a magical creature is.

Step 5: More Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff characters with prominent roles, and a few more Slytherin characters who aren't racist pureblood jerks and got sorted there because of ambition and resourcefulness instead. It's hard to get a sense of the whole "We all need to band together!" mentality that's being promoted when it's clear that Gryffindor is the Hero House and Slytherin is the Villain House.

Step 5a: Move Hermoine to Ravenclaw for starters, because it's obnoxious that Hero House can outdo all the other houses in their specialty and helps promote the 'stand together'.

Step 5b: give the characters more chances to interact with characters from other houses, since from my impression - they're generally isolated for a good chunk of the day.

Step 6: Harry gets called out on his shitty behavior in a significant manner that will in no way get circumvented thanks to any combination of Invisibility Cloak + Marauders Map + Asspatting friends.

Step 7: skip most of the Quidditch matches, as they tend to grind the plot to a halt.

lemme clarify on the 5b:

Yes they do mix houses in the classes, but there's a huge social pressure for them to not make friends in different houses. Also I think Ginny should be in Slytherin - so non-evil Slyth, and add in an arc about what happens if someone "Breaks" tradition that isn't just throwaway background information (Ron dealing with his little sister being in the "Dark Wizards" House, and forcing him to rethink things)
